Help! my cab is making a weird ringing sound

Hi,

I've got a problem with my cab. Its a 1x15 Reeves cab -- very nice, well built cab. Recently, however, I've been hearing a vibrating metal sound in my cab. It makes a ringing sound like an old door bell/buzzer or old telephone. Its been getting louder lately and its pretty noticeable now, especially when I play certain notes.

At first I thought it was the head, like a microphonic tube or something. But I got the head looked at and my tech said everything was cool. Any idea what it could be?

Thanks!

Does it happen no matter what room you play in? Do you notice it when playing with a band?

I actually haven't used the cab in a live situation in a while, as I tend to use cabs/combos available at practice. I'll try moving it to a different room after work tonight and see if that makes a difference.

Does it have a metal grill? My guess is it isn't screwed down well enough or in the right places and the metal is flexing and causing the ringing sound.

If it is a metal grill, play notes and place your hand in different areas and press in and see if it goes away.

If it's a metal grill, remove the grill and install rubber washers between the grill and the cab. Is it on casters? Could be a rattle there. Or it could be something loose in the cab. Open it up and check that all the speaker screws are tight. Make sure the jack plate is tight.

yeah I opened it up. I didn't see anything loose. It still makes the ringing sound even when I moved it to another room. THe ringing sounds like its coming from the cab.

Maybe you fried the speaker and it's dying slowly rather than all at once?

That's what I'm starting to think, JimmyM. Though I never pushed it hard, I pushed it hard today and I got some real flabby/fuzzy distortion, especially on lower notes (like F# and open A) coming from the speaker.

oh well such is life.
