Help needed in identifying the mystery cab.

Sign in to disble this ad
High I just bought a Sunn Beta Bass head and an old 4x12 cabinet to match. The head is 100 watts at 4ohm and only has 4 ohm speaker outs, so I have figured out that the cab is most likely four ohm. It is very nice, but the previous owner replaced the screen on the front with one with a strange Eddie Van Halen style (complete with signature) screen. It says Peavey Musical Instrument Corp.(or something like that) on the back so I guess it was made by Peavey, but other than that I have no idea what this cab is whatsoever. Can anyone identify this mystery cab? Any help would be very appreciated.

Here's the pics.

You'll need to post dimensions and some better photos.

Sorry for the pic. It is the best I can do. I'll see if I can get some dimensions later. It sounds fantastic. Very full and bassy, much more than I thought and the head is fantastic. For it only being 100 watts, it pumps some serious power and definitely can hold its own in a gig.

BTW the back of the cab gives no specs whatsoever, powering handling, impedence, nothing at all.

The measurements on the cab are 40" by 28". It says Peavey Electronics Corp and gives the serial code and the location of Peavey headquarters on the back.

I could be wrong but I had a early 70's Peavey guitar cab that looked just like that with the same type of porting.

It could possibly be. Does anyone know for sure?

Go here, and research the data base.

I couldn't find anything. It doesn't help when the cab does not list any sort of product series info.

I think it is a guitar cab. Does anyone know what speakers those are, what model this may be, and if it is safe for a bass?

Actually I am not even sure if it is a 4 ohm. It does not specify and my head states that it is 4 ohms and 100 watts max, but it does not specify whether or not the two outputs are 8 ohms a piece or what. I have heard of people using a 4 ohm cab in one output so I guess they could work as either 4 or 8 ohm. That makes this cab even more odd.

You know it's Peavey and you have a serial. I'd say your best bet at this point is to email Peavey with the photo and the serial - they may be able to give you an answer.

Good luck! And very cool looking rig.

Thanks. Already thought of it. I should get an email reply in about 6 months(kidding). The rig looks cooler with custom screen which can be seen in the pic.

Like this one? I believe this one was called simply "412 speaker enclosure" according to my "The Peavey Revolution" book. I can tell you that Peavey had lots of amps and cabs back in the day that were just general purpose for either guitar or bass...

Thanks hriger. So will it work for bass. I will possibly use it for gigs mind you. Also the one in that picture looks identical as far as baffle setup and everything, is that yours? If it is, is it a 4 or 8 ohm enclosure?

Even if it had a label stating its original Ohm load, you should still test your cab with an Ohm Meter to be absolutely sure. Someone may have replaced, re-coned or rewired the speakers to a different Ohm load on an older cab like that.

Here's a T/B thread with info on testing its ohm load: measure ohms

It appears to be all stock. The original owner told me that he has done nothing to this cab besides aesthetic changes.

That's exactly like it. I believe we may have a winner. Do you know whether the 412 speaker enclosure was 8 or 4 ohms?
