Question Help with a new head

Sign in to disble this ad
Long time lurker, first time poster here.
I have a challenge for all of you...
The band I play in is in Drop G tuning.
I currently play out of an Ampeg B2RE through a Crate 4x10 and a Peavey 1x15, but it just isn't enough power for me.
In a band setting, I just feel like I'm always trying to push my rig way too hard.
I'm thinking of upgrading to a pre amp/power amp rack setup, but I figured I'd ask the experts their opinion first
So, long story short, I play in Drop G and need a rig that can handle such low frequencies while still sounding full and round.

How much you wanna spend? My suggestion- find a used head in the 300-500 watt range, and instead of the 410/15 set up, which is a bad pairing all around, look for either a pair of 8 ohm 2x12's, or something similar. Just about any good speaker cabs will be a big tonal improvement from what you're used to, and the speakers are definately more important than the amp, in the big picture.

I was looking to spend under a grand for a head, and I hadn't even gotten into cabinets yet.
Should I put that money into a new cabinet and keep the Ampeg for now?

Yeah, I'd lose the cab's and get some good spkrs first. You can always upgrade the amp later.

Alright. What size speakers would you suggest? I just want a lot of punch and clarity. It's already really hard to get heard through the mix when the guitars are tuned so low, haha.

I get massive mounts of Bone Crushing Low-end & volume from the BP102 in fullrange style.
