Help? (Peavey content)

Sign in to disble this ad
I just purchased a old Peavey 2x15. It sounded good, but then I noticed sound is coming ONLY from the bottom 15". I took the non-active speaker out, and looked at it. I looks fine, but whenever I push on it, I hear what sounds like scraping. I'm a little puzzled, as I've heard that when speakers rub they still work, but rattle a lot. I looked at the receipt(I DID get it from GC), and they don't offer squat as far as repair. I'm still intending to use the cabinet, I just want to know if I should get someone to try and fix it, or just stick another 15" in there. As I said before, Help?

I used the search function, but I'm not sure what I'm looking for.

After the voice coil gets damaged (excessive rubbing) they will not play at all. You may be able to get a replacement basket/cone/voice coil for that speaker.

Would I contact Peavey for this, or just use a different brand speaker in it?

If it is a field replaceable basket then Peavey sells them, so does MF and several others. Post a pic of the back of the speaker if you can.

Do not use the cab until you've replaced the bad driver. The dead driver is upsetting the tuning of the cab, and using it could result in the other driver being damaged as well.

Don't remember Peavey using square magnets? May already be a miss-match? BFM?
67 was an Eminence sold in Ampeg cabs.

May have been put in by the previous owner. I'll have to sell a bass for a new driver. I was thinking Eminence since I'll have some money. What would work well in a 2x15? The cabinet has a divider in the middle, don't know if that makes a difference. I have to get this cab up and running by September 18th, so time is of the essence.

IIRC, GC offers a 30 day guarantee on used gear. e.g. you can return it within 30 days if it's borked.

Talk to a manager to be sure, before you go buying anything.

Also, most of the time you can purchase a 1 year warranty on used gear from GC, and you should have 30 days to do it, in most cases.

In my country it doesn't matter what the store offers for warranty or any of that ********, if the good that was sold (as commercial activity, second hand or not) is not of acceptable quality they are 100% liable to repair or replace. This means you don't have to buy the extended 3 year warranty on your $5000 TV, 'cause if it breaks down after 4 you'd still be covered by the law

You should brush up on your consumer protection law

I'll do that, I'm just curious to whether or not they should repair it. The sales person guaranteed it was in 100% working condition, they even had an SVT hooked up to it. I don't want to return the cab, just get it fixed. It was either that or this:

1.The Peavey is a bass cabinet.
2.The wait period on the Gemini just keeps going up.
3. 4 tweeters AND a horn? That would sound like absolute ass.

Peavey did use those speakers in the mid 80's and you should be able to get them reconed. Check you local yella pages for speaker repair shops in your area.

Return it. Then ask them what their price is on it with the broken speaker.

A Peavey BW speaker may do the trick you'll just have to find out the specs on the cab and Peavey speakers are relatively inexpensive.

Most 15"s that I've seen are more expensive than the comparable Eminence.

I was a Peavey dealer from 1974 - 2005.
Those are old Eminence drivers that Peavey used in their early cabinets. The number on them tells the diameter, magnet weight and impedance. Back then you could get them with the Eminence as standard and the Black Widows were optional. This is way before they made 15" Scorpions, for a long time Scorpions were only available in 10's and 12's.

Without measurements of the cabinet and its ports (height, width and depth) any discussion of speakers is mostly meaningless. Replacing with a Peavey driver is a total waste of money, mostly. Stuff's super expensive for the performance in most cases.

The Peavey PR15 neo is kinda on sale right now and is not a terrible bass guitar driver (bit low on the xmax side, but it's very very cheap for that light of a driver). That's probably the only one I would consider, and you should replace both.

Eminence's Kappalite or deltalite are both pretty decent. The kappalite is more tolerant of different box sizes and IIRC higher tunings as well (like most Peavey cabs will have, probably up around 55-60hz).

Would I be able to make a separate cab with the working 15"?I'm broke, with absolutely no money left, so the Deltalite seems like a good option. And if the tuning is 55 hz, then they seem like a good match. How would I measure the cabinet? Outside dimensions?

Measure the inside dimensions. Measure the 3 sides of each of those triangular ports and the baffle thickness since the ports aren't actually tubes.
