HELP - problems with amp or power supply?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey TB,

I've had a bit of trouble at a gig last night with my amp, and I'm pretty sure it was the power supply (perhaps not being grounded properly or something) but I would like to get some extra opinions on the matter. I've got an old Warwick pro-fet 2, capable of putting out 125 watts through 8 ohms and 250 watts through 4 ohms. My gig last night was at a bar that I've played in a few times before, and I was playing with a friend's band as well - whose bassist offered to lend me their ampeg 610 cabinet (not sure of the specific model, but it it 4 ohms and has a high frequency horn on it) provided that I help them load and unload their gear. I agreed to this, I figured, it would cut down on setup time and I wouldn't have to pack my warwick 410 pro, I would just have to bring my bass and my head.

I get to the bar, help with unloading gear and set up the amp, and plug it into an extension chord covered in duct tape, thinking to myself "well, THIS couldn't possibly fail". All goes well throughout the first 3/4 of my gig, when suddenly in the middle of the song, the mute on my amp turns on, so I rush to my amp, check if everything is plugged in, pushed the mute button a few times - it wouldn't un-mute, so I turned it off, and then back on and breathed a sigh of relief as it returned to making it's big boomy bassiness. Once my set was over, I noticed it was raining out and I think that might still be relevant, as there was some water leaking in through the roof on the stage, thought there were no puddles it is still a bad sign IMO.

The next band is setting up, and plugged his ampeg SVT 3-pro into a different plug, I assume on the same circuit. His head wouldn't leave standby, even after he tried to reset it, so I lent him my head, which seemed to work without a hitch. Towards the end of his set though, the head kept crapping out - it was on, the light that indicates mute/standby mode is off, but NO SOUND WAS COMING OUT. He would reset the amp, and it would work for about half of a song, then keep crapping out sporadically before just crapping out and forcing him to reset it again. They kept it up like that for three songs and then they decided just to give it up at that point and call it a day, given that they had one song left anyway.

I have never had anything like this happen with my amp. I'm thinking this is probably the power supply, given that it happened with BOTH bass heads, although it didn't happen to the guitar amps, which also raises questions because they were plugged into the same circuit.

In short, it was a rainy day in a bar with a somewhat sketchy power supply and a leak in the ceiling and the bass amps crapped out but not the guitar amps, should I get my head checked out, or is it more likely to be the power supply?

also, should I try to scrounge up a backup for tonight's gig?

With extension cords and questionable wiring in the venue, it's possible there was considerable voltage drop, and the amps were going into Protect mode.

Some power strips have voltage indicators, those are good to have in tough situations, to see if under- or over-voltage is present (gotta see under load, just testing the outlet with a meter may not be a true indicator of the situation under load).

I suspect the amp is OK.
