Help replacing the preamp tube in a WT800

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all,

I tried posting this on the Eden forums, but their system apparently refuses to send me the registration email it should, soooo...

I'm trying replace the preamp tube in my WT800 (like the title says!).

I'm having a mess of trouble removing the tube that's in there now -- it won't budge. This is the first time I've ever done this, so I'm trying not to force it too hard.

The tube itself appears to be sitting in some kind of silver encasement (not the silver tube that covers it -- I already took that off. I'm not that dumb) that covers the bottom quarter of the tube. I don't think that's part of the tube, but when I pull on the tube, it doesn't come out and I feel like I'm taking the whole PCB with it.

Am I missing something?

Thanks guys.

grasp the glass, pull straight up ... do not break the glass needless to say. I don't recall the 'silver' thing from last time I changed the tube in mine - you do this about once a century afterall ... IIRC in mine (an A model) the tube just sits in the socket...

The tube is only held in by its pins, which are probably pretty snug.

You may have to stabilize the PC board to avoid flexing it while gently wiggling the tube and pulling it.

You might find a piece of rubber hose that fits the tube and can act as a puller.

FYI, here's the silver thing.

I'm assuming it's just the thing the tube sits in.

I tried to find a pic; now we have one.

That metal skirt isn't attached to the tube, but you can use it to hold down the PC board as you pull the tube.

If the tube seems really stuck, you should wear leather gloves in case it breaks.

I sense that the fun part is going to be getting the new one in.
