Help with speaker cabs

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys,

I've had a large combo amp (Peavey MKIII) for a while, but the speaker is a 15" and its buggered, as a 15" is rather expensive to replace a bought a 2x10 cab off ebay recently for a bargain, its cut down from an older Peavey cab with 2x10 1x15 or 18 (not sure).

Now it says 4 ohms on the back, but since its being cut down and re-wired I guess that has changed. I got the multi meter onto it and it reads 6.5 ohms resistance, is this the same as the impedance (or close enough?).

The back of the Mk III has 2 outputs that read '130 watts, 4 Ohms'.

Now im under the impression that more ohms isn't going to blow up a ss amp, just limit the wattage you can get out of it?

Is it safe to hook this baby up? It should be fine and just give me a lower wattage that id get with 4 ohms if im not mistaken.

If im doing something drastically wrong, please let me know before I fry myself, as im keep to see what sort of volume I can push with it

6.5Ω would be typical DC resistance for a nominal 8Ω speaker.

This won't harm the amp in any way.

Ah, cool.

So its likely 2 16 ohm 10" in parallel, which originally had an 8 ohm 15" also in parrallel (as that would give 4 ohms total impedence)?

So all it should do is cut my 130W output down to 65Ws, correct?

Depends on the amp. Most amps don't really put out twice the power at 4Ω as at 8Ω, so the result will probably be a little more than 65 watts. Not that it will matter.

And yes, that's very likely two 16Ω drivers in parallel.

If your Peavey combo is still in one piece, you could just replace the 15" and have a great amp. Go to: http://www.avatarspeakers.com/ and click on "scratch and dent/overstock". Dave is selling 4 ohm Eminence Delta LF 15" speakers for $68 incl shipping. Sell that other stuff you had and stick with a great combo. The 15" Delta LF will be killer in that combo for $68, you cant go wrong.

Peavey only uses 4 or 8 ohm speakers. If it's an 8 ohm cab, they are two 4 ohm speakers wired in series.

If the drivers that were put in are Peavey drivers. That we don't know. Not that it matters.
