Help with upgrading Peavey 1820

Sign in to disble this ad
So I have a little cash to spend after Xmas and I want a better bass cab. I own a Peavey 1820(2 10" and 1 18") and a Peavey MK IV Bass head. The built in cross over was messed up the first day I bought it and the 18 would not play when I plugged into it, but I just plugged into the bi-amp low and was pleased. I'm pretty sure only the 18 played when I used the low input. Recently, I plugged into the hi and low and the tens sounded awful. I'm pretty sure atleast one of them is blown.

My big dilemma is whether I should bother putting money into this cab or should I look into getting a whole new cab? If I were to get new speakers, I would probably get the neo 10s (8ohm) from Carvin. I really like how indestructible the 1820 is (even though it weighs a **** load). Also, I like how loud it can get. I can drown out my guitar player and it's barely even turned up. I just want a little more punch and high end.

What do you guys think?

Kyle

If it is broken, it can't be that indestructible. Best thing to do is talk to Peavey, and return it to spec, because swapping in other drivers probably won't do what you hope. Other alternative is to sell it and build a Fearful, as that has the big driver and small driver thing, but uses the latest tech.

If the 18 and one of the 10's work, you could do your own crossover for little money. A single inductor would lowpass the 18 1st order, then high pass the 10 2nd order, (one capacitor and one inductor). Shoot for about 250hz. A single 10 has plenty enough output to keep up with the 18 and better dispersion to boot in that configuration.

Have someone check your input jacks.. this is a common issue with your crossover.

yes... ill bet the switching jacks are the culprit. have them cleaned or replaced, or just bypass them internally.
