Hi-Fi Stereo Tube Power Amp

Sign in to disble this ad
Just dug up an old RCA tube stereo power amp and its says its rated at 120 watts Would this be a reasonably good bass amp if I hook up a pre-amp to it? Would it be safe to crank it into some fuzz?

Thanks in advance

More information, what model amp, pics, etc. You have given us the skimpiest of info to make any kind of judgement or opinion on your "new" amp. As to the power, my guess is you got the 120 watts from the label (if any) that states the maximum current the amp draws from the AC outlet.

With 2 6L6 per channel there's no way it's going to make more than 25-30W per channel. Best thing to do is first, do not power it up! Take it to a qualified amp repair person and get it checked out and cleaned up. It will make a really cool hifi amp with some nice efficient spearers.

With four 6l6's and big transformers it should be good for a nice beefy 100-130 watt mono bass power amp. If possible, I'd take it to a tech to find out the condition of the capacitors, tubes etc before buying it. A visit to a decent tech will run about $50-65 an hour so factor that in to your price.

For $300 you could do far better on the used BASS amp market. By the time you get that thing operational you'll have sunk at least another 2-300 bucks into it.

Edit: P.S. You'd also have to work out how to connect the amps two channels into a speaker cabinet. That 280W you are reading is most probably the power draw from the mains supply.

That amp on evilbay sure is a mess! It is not a stereo amp, and the 280 watts is what the amp may draw from the wall outlet not the amp's power output. The photos of the inside of the amp looks like a grade school kid built it. If you intend to use this amp have it thoroughly checked out by some really capable of doing so. Also, be careful of the barrier strip connections, some may not be friendly to touching them.

Its not the amp on ebay Its just similar to it i dug it out of my grandparents attic and they said if I wanted it i could keep it since they haven't used it in god knows how long. Would i be better off just leaving it as is and not using it for bass?

Yes, put any money you will have to invest in it towards a real bass amp.
