hissing sound?

I have an Ibanez 65W combo that I use for practice and today I plug in my bass and it starts making an annoying fuzzy hissing sound. What could have caused this? and how could I fix this?

Any new sources of electrical interference? Got the TV on?

Bad active bass battery?

Just some thoughts...

Brand new battery right of the package (duracell) today.

Everything in the room turned off except the lights.

So confused.

1. Unplug your bass but leave the cord plugged into the amp, and tell us what happens (Don't touch the tip of the plug while the amp is on. Let the plug dangle in the air.)

2. Now touch the plug BODY (which I assume is metal) and tell us what happens.

3. Now unplug the cord from the amp and tell us what happens.

1. Slight buzzing sound/ same sound from before but quieter, increasingly getting louder and going back to quiter.
2. Still a little bit of fuzziness coming from the amp
3. Quiet almost silent buzzing

Ive used multiple cables and I'll be trying my bass on a different rig later today. Its brand new 2010 Schecter Omen Extreme-5, only have had it about 3 weeks. Played one show with it.

Have you tried a different bass with your rig?

Take any cord you know to be good and short the tip to the sleeve/body at the instrument end, let that end dangle, and plug the other end into the amp. Let us know what happens.

I'm away right now and only have this bass and this rig with me.

Craig can you explain that differently please?

Rick, your instrument cord has two conductors. See the bottom plug of this pic. The conductors are marked 1 and 3. Short them together with something, such as a twisted paper clip or a length of stripped wire or anything metal that can be bent to do the job. The short has to remain in place on its own, i.e. you can't be touching the plug to do this test.

Sorry for the delay in response.

I think that it's my Schecter, or a combination of the combo and my Schecter. I plug in my other bass, Ibanez ATK and it works just fine. I'm sooooo confused.

does the sound get quieter when you touch the strings? if so, it could be a loose ground wire

This is great! You have narrowed it down to the new bass from a multitude of possibilities.

At three weeks, can you return the bass? Or at least have some warranty work done? You might pop open the control cavity and look for loose/flimsy connections. Does it do both active and passive, and if so, any difference between the two?

try this one, sounds like grounding to me - particularly if your using a high output bass.
