Hissing Sound from GK 700

Sign in to disble this ad
A couple of months ago I got a GK 700 RB, and I run it through a GK 210 and 410 cab. All of sudden it is hissing loud. There is nothing between my guitar and my amp head. The only other thing in my rig is my rack-mount tuner. How can I eliminate the hissing? Will a Rocktron Hush Super C accomplish this? I read somewhere that the Hush cannot be the only thing between your guitar and amp...and there must be some effects, etc before your Hush. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

What settings are you using on the 700RB?

Active bass? Check battery.

Thanks for the quick post. I am playing a Fender American Standard Jazz bass. On the head the voicing filters are off, the active equalization are between 11 o'clock and 12. The boost and tweeter are at 12, and the woofer is at 3 o'clock.

Does the hiss go away or get lower if you turn the tweeter on the 700 off?

Do you have the high pass filter engaged for the woofer? That adds some hiss to my 1001RB.

Have you tried running them full range and skipping the tweeter amp?

Just tossing out ideas...

If this is a noise that was not there before and now its happening it could be a repair issue. I turned down or off the horns on my cabs and the hiss went away when I had my 700RB. Durng that time I took it to a repair shop and they said nothing was wrong with it? Also it could noise from the power outlet, lighting etc.

The hissing goes way down if I turn off the tweeter and woofer hi-cut, but I'm realizing now it's not a hiss, it is a loud electric humming sound.

that sounds more like a grounding issue. could be anything from the bass, cable, or amp. if you determine it's the amp, maybe a quick trip to an amp tech is in order. unwanted noises can be almost unbearable at times, hope you get it sorted.

Add anything recently like energy saving lights? Other new things on that circuit?

I realized just the other day that I can hear my neighbor's sewing machine through my GK...

Nothing new added to the circuit. It is a used head, so perhaps it is a grounding issue like someone mentioned. I bought it through a music store, so it is still under warranty even as a used item. Can't hurt to have them check it out. Thanks for the input everyone.

If the J bass has single coil pickups it could be making some noise also. Musicman puts a phantom coil in there basses thats what I got and finally my humm, hiss noise problems were solved. The quiteist amp I ve had was mark bass little mark 3. the 2 off them together = no or very little noise.

I just got back from the music store. They said there was definitely something wrong with my amp, so it's in for servicing. They gave me an Ampeg SVT3 Pro as a loaner. Hope that sounds good.

I had a 700rbII once and at about 6 months old it had the same ailment. It turned out to be the pre-amp circuit. GK Paid for it to be fixed locally for me under warranty. Sounded great after that and I eventually sold it, but I still love GK.

Yes, I love my GK. It sounded great before this problem. It's covered under warranty, so no big deal, and hopefully smooth sailing from here.

I've owned two 700rb-IIs, gigged the heck out of them, and never had any troubles with either - still have one of them, actually - and recently also bought a BL600, just because it was in good condition and working order, and dirt cheap($75)...

OP - get your 700 fixed, and hang on to it - you'll be glad you did... I mostly play Mesa these days, but still use my 700rb-II sometimes, and always enjoy playing thru it...
