ok, so I just brought home my first legitimate rig, that being an Ampeg Portaflex, with the PF500 head, and the 2X10 portaflex cab with HF horn, and oh my goodness, I Love this Amp!!

It sounds amazing, gets LOUD, and the head has all the features and buttons I could want. the cab is glorious due to the fact that it gets 450 watts at 8ohms, weighs in at about 47 pounds, comes with removable casters, and isn't even all that large! it comes with those wonderful emenance speakers, and sounds wonderful!! And, on top of all that, because the top comes off, you can stuff allllllllll your cables and other stuff in the cab! which for me means one less trip from my car to the venue when it comes time to unload and load!

the head was priced around 400, and the cab went for around 400 as well, so for 450 watts, with separate head and cab, I'd say that is a real good deal!

Exactly what I was about to write.
The thread title should rather be "You need to Buy a Legitimate Rig".

I got to play one of these at a local shop yesterday. I like it - it was the 2-10 version.

I need to sell of a few things and get it. It looks classy, sounds good, is lighter, smaller than my current rig, and if it is reliable, will be compatible with my other cab for bigger jobs, add the 1-12 for more ass and a back saver!

I can see this being something I will say was $800 spent well.

+1

(Should I say +500?)

I was just checkin this out yesterday.
I thought I saw 500w at 4ohms...300 at 8.
(Of course I was peeking around the back cuz I couldnt pull the head out anymore without disconnecting cables..or maybe it was my imagination )

I was sorta impressed with the sound too..

Ok - I'll play.

Picked the head up - couldn't get the cab yet - money is tight.

Was able to plug it into the Avatar Neo 4-10 last night, and also into the Ampeg SVT410 HLF. HLF was clearly more AMPEG'ish - (uh.....Yea-h!) and very beefy. Avatar was more middy, but not in a bad way. I think I can work with either. I will try the Avatar 112 tonight, it has a Kappa Pro in it, and has been a workhorse for the past 6 years or so. It is my go-to cab for most small and very love rooms. I think these two should work and play well together until the other cab comes along.

Initial impressions, are that this head does what I want it to. It can grind some, with the gain pushed, it can push ridiculous lows, at low volume. I found that more with the 410HLF.

The controls are not difficult, but I will have to play with them more to get a better feel for their response. I dont' have any gripes - and honestly don't have a lot of other heads to compare it to. I have played through a couple of older B15's - and get what they are about. I like it. I personally am pushing a slightly different vibe with this, with more lows, and less snort, but thats me.

I thought it would fit in a standard laptop case - but not quite. I did have a slightly larger Pelican Hard case for a laptop which works well, for the head and power chord. Not much else. The Speakon cable wouldn't quite fit without causing the case to bow out a little. this isn't a prob - I have to carry other cables anyway, in a other bag, so one more is no-issue. I will probably make a solid 1/4 - 1/4 though to keep in the case as a back up - in case they become separated or something.

I have a triple gig weekend this weekend, so I will take it out and see how it fares. because of weight and room sizes, the Neo410 is the cab for ALL weekend.

I had been using either my Peavey T Max, or my Sansamp RBI/QSC Plx 1602 rigs.
(Have had two other peaveys, and a SWR x500) I won't say anything to the guys, just wait to see if it is noticeable.

yeah, my mistake on the initial wattage, i was referring to the cab, because it is rated at 450 watts at 8ohms (the 2x10 version in the portaflex series). But yeah, the head is rated at 500 watts at 4ohms, and 300 watts at 8ohms. I think one of the best parts of the cab is how you can throw all your cables in there for easy transport! makes life soooo much easier!!

is this a good amp for metal?

Hi,

Anyone could post here if this is a good amp for metal sound?

Also do you think there's a major drawback pluging it into a different brand cabinet, say Warwick cabinet?

Thanks a lot.

Used the head last night with the Avatar SB112 - Kappa Pro Loaded. I shot the cab straight across the stage instead of out at the crowd since there was a nice house system and good sound guy. about a 200 seat room, at about 80 seats filled for a blues jam.

Sound was easy to control, and cab was easily adequate. MUCHO headroom, very old school tone, clear, clean, bite just as much or little as you want made load in and out so easy.

DI is s shade hot to the board, so I had to pad it, no prob. Just didn't know at first. might be because I had the gain a little hot, but no matter, it worked out fine.

I have a triple this weekend, I will use it with the avatar neo 4-10 and see how that works. same rig all weekend.

I like its voice -

There's a Mega-Thread about this amp, but it's kind of nice have someone start a fresh one and be so excited.
The other thread is, kind of, mega...
Have fun and enjoy.
