any reason a # 14 extension cord couldn.t work for a speaker cord. i've got a pile of ends off dead cords and a couple extention cords my dog chewed, thought i'd cut out the good sections of extention cord and solder some 1/4" ends to 2 of the wires?

Would work fine but, if you can, I'd go Speakons.

No reason at all. 14 ga. is plenty for up to 25 foot runs.

i've still got a speaker cable i made in 1985 from a piece of zipcord from a household extension cord that got accidently cut in half. still works great, too. i only stopped using it because i switched to cabs where the speaker jack is visible to the audience, so i thought i better not look like a piker

Only problem with zip cord is that its always tangled up when you get it out. But some people like that.

A guitar player in a former band liked to wrap his guitar and PA cords around his hand and stuff the resulting birdnests in a plastic Walmart bag. He said it was easy, cheap, and takes up less space.

Except every other gig he would pull one out, untangle it, and find it it didn't work anymore because he'd pulled the connections loose try to untangle them.

And then there was the time his Walmart bag broke and spilled cord wads all over the sidewalk...

Years ago I got a spool of the stuff (in white) from Radio Shack to make some speaker runs for my stereos at home. It was really cheap and I still have some to work with. I like being able to custom fit them to the needs of the installation.

I would do the same for my rig if I had the need, but still have perfectly functioning cables I bought years ago.

Not if you put them away properly in the first case!
