hooking 16"ampeg with Hiwatt DR201

Sign in to disble this ad
hi gentlemen,
i'm new to this forum, so please let me quickly introduce myself :
former violon player, learn bass on my own, i'm now film score composer and music producer. Work in this oldskool so caled 'vintage' studio from the 70's with some nice piece of history instruments (guitars, keys, amps, percussions...) and BASSES !!!

My question is a technical one : i would like to use my DR201 head (four jacks outputs) with TWO ampeg 15" classic series (8 ohm each). ( SORRY THE TITTLE IS WRONG WITH 16" AMPEG ... )

I've got an impedence selecter at the rear of the head : 16 / 8 / 4 ohms.

I intend to plug the first speaker to the "1" output jack, and the second one to the "4rth" output jack.
Who know wich corect impedence should i use ???

Anyone a clue ???
My very best regards
m_o

2 8 ohm cabs in parallel will present a 4 ohm load to the amp. And welcome to TB.

On my DR201 all four of the output sockets are wired in parallel. If yours is the same then you can plug the cabinets into any of the sockets.

.. so ok, it's actually a 4 ohms charge.
Should i put the selecter on "4 ohms", considering there will be TWO speakers plugged ?
looks like the four outputs are parallel wired, so the head might be "recognising" a 4 ohm total load ?
i know this is a special subject concerning this perticuliar head.
This system of four jack has been designed to force people to use TWO cabs, and nothings comes out from the head since two jacks are plugged.

there is this wonderfull HIWATT page by Mark Huss

and a FAQ where the subject is mentioned :
MHuss Hiwatt Amplifier Pages - Frequently Asked Questions

main page : Mark Huss Hiwatt Amplifier Pages

according to his SERIAL NUMBER PAGE, my head was built in 1973.

Thank you all guys

Thank you but I don't actually use it to play out. I've been SS since the seventies.

Yes. Amp's ohm selector on 4 ohms if you use BOTH cabs. If you ever use just one of those cabs, don't forget to set it on 8 ohms.

hey all,
i've just try the Hiwatt head (200watts) with two ampeg classic 15" speakers with a 4001 Rick : holly s* !!!
the sound is very powerfull, and beyond this very SOLID.
The low range is very tight, and the bass control so efficient and beautyfull !
The palette is very wide, from very *LOUD* and clean to creamy overdriven, with full gain on, and volume control with master.
Pure Brit Rock vibe !
It's been 2 years i've got this head and .. just discover now it's much more interesting with a bass guitar !!!

Will soon try with JB, PB and Stingray, keep you aware for thoose interested ;
Cheers

cool review marc !
let me tell you that the best combination (IMHO) is: Hiwatt + PBass with flats (played with a pick)
Check it out if you can. You won't regret !
best
