Hookup Question

Sign in to disble this ad
Really didn't know where to post this. Ya'll move it, if needed.

So, I ordered a right-angle adapter for my instrument cord (1/4" female to 1/4" male). I also want one for my speaker cord, but couldn't find one that said it was just for speakers---or are they the same? I know speaker cords and instrument cords are different and shouldn't be interchanged. But what about the ends? Or, that is, is this adapter for either? It has one ring around the tip and the body is all metal is about all I can say about it. The MF site didn't specify except to say it was perfect for lefties trying to get the cord out of their way, so I assumed it was at least for an instrument. Thanks for any info.

idk if i would use one..

its not "ideal" to use instrument cables to connect speakers, but it will work. why not just buy a longer speaker cable?

The "ends" are the same - it's the wire in between that is different.

Just make sure you get a reputable name connector, and solder it up.

No, no, I'm not talking about substituting an instrument cable for a speaker cable. I'm talking about using the right-angle adapter I have coming. It doesn't say if it's for instruments or speakers. Is it ok to use for either?

Thanks. It's already put together. It has a metal barrel for the female, and then a male end at a right angle. So it's good for either, huh? Is that right?

Yep.............as long as your talking about the ends.

Don't know if I would use an adapter though.

I would just get a good quality 1/4" right angle end plug, and solder it to one end of the speaker cable.

Adapters are a PITA. If you need a right angle plug buy one and replace one of the straight ones. You can buy instrument cables with a straight plug on one end and a right angle plug on the other.

No. Adapters are bad. Get the right cable for the job.

Unless: the show must go on, and there's no time to get the correct cable before the gig. Then it's OK to use whatever adapters can safely make things work.

I have instrument cables with right angles on one end. But, I haven't been able to find a speaker cable with one right angle. Again, my question is whether or not the adapter is compatible to instrument cables and speaker cables alike.

Yes you can use the same kind of adapter plug end. These guys are saying don't use an adapter because they can work loose over time, become sketchy, lose contact etc. It is better to solder a right angle plug to the end of the wire for durability but yes, the plug ends are the same, it's the wire in between that's different between instrument/speaker cable.

Thanks. That's my plan, but for now I'll have the adapter on hand if needed. Gonna buy some wire and ends soon, for both speaker and instrument cables. I agree, adapters are a PITA and be iffy. I ordered this one for just in case.
