At the venues where I just used a preamp, I always got a great sound. I have used an Avalon U5, than my Furman PQ-3; now I would bring my VT Bass and my Radial ProD2.

Amps are so passé; rotisserie cookers are the s--t.

I've done it but I really don't like not using an amp. I hate the sound of bass through most monitors.

You'll notice the mics.

Don't want to go DI and miss all that rotisserie tone.

I've yet to do it and achieving pleasing results. The FOH sound might be good, but the stage sound is always lacking to me. Lots of mids and treble, but no bottom end. I understand how this is beneficial from a monitoring standpoint, but to my ear is pretty awful.

I saw that tour, and I could not for the life of me find his cabs! (Once I realized that the chicken cookers were not them.) Don't tell me Geddy is D.I. only. Where were they?

Those guys rock pretty hard.

He's using a Sansamp preamp and no cabs.

I've gone amp-less on several occasions, and I've loved it. Some of them have been with monitors on stage and some have been with in-ears.

Not quite. While he used a sansamp RBI as one tool while recording in the studio, he still uses a large rack full of processing behind the henhouses when playing live. It was listed in Bass Player within the last two years or so. A couple of Avalons, some speaker simulators, and a bunch of other stuff.

I heard he switched to KC Masterpiece for the last tour, though, after giving up his Open Pit endorsement deal.

“Geddy’s bass rig is very simple,” adds bass tech Russ Ryan. Geddy sends his bass to the house via three channels: an Avalon U5 DI, a Tech 21 SansAmp RPM preamp, and a Palmer PDI-05 Speaker Simulator.
“Geddy uses the RPM for his dirtier, distorted sound,” says Ryan. For years Lee had used the SansAmp RBI; he switched to the newer RPM model after auditioning it in his home studio. “The RPM’s sound has a little more detail than the RBI, and the distortion is a little more controllable,” says Geddy.
The most esoteric piece of gear in Geddy’s rack is the Palmer Speaker Simulator. “These are older models, from the ’90s,” Russ points out. “They’re very hard to find, because most musicians won’t give them up.” “The old Palmers have a really warm bottom—they add a nice low-end distortion,” adds Geddy.

I have gone without but only on some larger stages that had tremendous side fills and it was all good!

I also use theTech 21 Bass VT pedal. The only downside for me has been when the club monitors give out, or the drunken soundman starts tweaking. Still, given the nature of the places I play, I prefer to haul this little box than my 212 rig.

I play bass at church directly into the mixing board and then through the Bose L1 PA system we have. I set my channel on the board so that the lows and mids are a bit higher and the treble is a tad lower, and I crank the volume to the max. That way I can control my sound right from the bass. I set my volume at 75% so there's headroom for when I need it, and the tone at halfway. Sounds really good and I like the control and versatility.

Think back to that guy Joshua and his famous Jerrico gig man! he wasn't all "hey all I need is this sans amp thing and that will just about get her done".
He had Hootzpa!, pazazz! you know, its like he was rock and roll or something, Bet he hired Clair Brothers or some heavy outfit like that man.
