How bout using a Traynor YGL-3 Mark III for bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello everyone

So whattada ya'll think, i found this at a pawnshop for a decent price and am contemplating, please offer up ur opinion.

A mid 70's Traynor YGL-3 Mark 3 for my recently acquired 50's reissue precision bass? 80 watts and built like fort knox

its for my low volume folk-boogie blues band- small gigs, tight venues and even rehearsals in my living room.

its a combo, i wouldnt be opposed to removing the head and powering a proper bass cab- 2x10 or 1x12. But for the meantime i gotta a feeling this thing will sound pretty awesome for what i wanna do, let me know if im missing something?

thanks

....and if you havent figured it out im a guitar guy- for guitar this amp would RIP but itll be way too loud!

You would have to change the speakers, and I'm assuming it's an open-back cab? Don't know what speakers would be good for bass, in that open backed cab.

Assuming you put a proper cab on that amp, it would probably sound really good. Tubes is tubes, right?

Yeah, take the amp chassis out and build it into a seperate head for sure. It will sound much better with a proper bass cab . The original Marslands used by Traynor are mediocre. Be prepared for a bright , loud , clean sound. If you are not concerned about the vintage value , those Traynors are an awesome platform for modification/ tweaking for bass. Just make sure you use a knowledgeable tech with experience on the old Traynors, so everything can be easily reversed and put back to original should you repackage it in the combo. Hint, the old Traynor stuff is flying under the wire now but the prices will steadily rise . Enjoy your new old robust loud and proudly made in Canada amp.
