How can I plug multiple bass guitars to a single amp ?

Sign in to disble this ad
Is there a bass amp for teachers, where the students can plug several basses ? (at least 4 )

Also, can I use passive and active inputs at the same time for 2 basses ?

Thanks

I've seen amps with 2 instrument inputs, never seen more than that, but even if it exists, wouldn't it be cheaper to just buy 4 practice amps or 2 amps with 2 inputs?

1st question - get a mixer

2nd question - probably depends on your amp

Do a Google search for Rolls mini mixer. You will find your easy solution there.

Or just get a vintage amp with two channels with bright and normal inputs. They can be had reasonably inexpensive, the acoustic 150b is an example, so are some fender bassman tube heads.

Roland and Behringer make so called PA and Keyboard amps. Usually 4 inputs, and it would handle low volume basses.

Two really good products. The bass bone has a level control in case your active and passive basses are different signal strengths.

spend like 60 to 70 bucks on a small mixer. Behringer is full of them.

+1

And if you have a 4-channel mixer, you can just use the levels on each channel of the mixer to balance the volumes of the basses before the mixer's main output hits the bass amp input.

Any mixer with Hi-Z inputs will do. There are plenty with these types of high impedance inputs. Then you can independently control the gain, and thereby the volume, of each bass, active or passive.

This is an expensive solution, but it allows the class to plug in, listen to the teacher, listen to themselves solo or to play with an ensemble without irritating the adjacent classrooms. We are looking into this system for our music tech classes.

I have to say that when I tried to use a mixer that my tone was colored and not in a good way. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the output of most mixers are boosted by their pre-amps. I use multiple Morley foot switches to control three basses. I've never heard about the Rolls mini mixer, but the few things I've gotten from Rolls have been really good.

Fewer features than that Yamaha (#13), but 10x cheaper:

JamHub. This is intended as a silent solution, but you could also run out to an amp.

That would probably be due to plugging a passive bass into a Low-Z 1/4" input. And yes, that would undoubtedly color the sound. You'd need a Hi-Z input.

With this you can plug 4 instruments into one channel. Also each has its own volume control.

I have a Roland Cube which I use for low volume solo practice. It has 3 channels that can be used for multiple instruments.

Phil Jones makes several amps that will take a bass in each channel at the same time.
