How to clean speakers?

Sign in to disble this ad
My Ashdown rig sounds very muddy, but it's definitely not my bass (new rounds and 500k pots) so I'm putting it partly down to the dirty speakers.

They are the paper type, and covered in a layer of grey, stiff dust. So how would I go about removing this completely?

It won't come off with a toothbrush or kitchen cloth. Even if this wouldn't do wonders for the sound, I still actually want to get them nice and clean.

Thanks

I'd use compressed air, but wait for more experienced speaker guru's to advise you better.

Doubtful that it will make any difference in the sound, but try some masking tape (or the tape used to remove lint from clothing).

Thanks dude, I don't have a compressor.

The best I could do would be PC keyboard duster, but I could blow harder than one of those...

I was thinking maybe liquid, but I wouldn't want to ruin/tear the speaker. I don't know if speakers go soggy and soft like paper does...

Damp cloth works somewhat but don't get them actually wet. You may have tried that with the kitchen cloth. I'd say try tape too, may have to do it multiple times.

THANK GOD! That would probably blow holes in them!

And that is the MOST force you should apply.

NO! See also: NONONONONONONO!

if you can't blow dust off them with a keyboard duster leave them alone. The dust is NOT your problem.

Does the speaker cab have a tweeter? Perhaps that blew a fuse or burned up, which would make the cabinet sound muddy if you are used to hearing a tweeter. Just a thought.

If the layer of "dust" cannot be shifted with a toothbrush I don't think you should try and remove it. I've never seen anything on a speaker cone that couldn't be removed with a soft cloth. Maybe you are misidentifying what's on there.

If your rig sounds muddy it's not your speakers doing it.

I unplugged the tweeter ages ago. With the tweeter fitted, it was muddy but with a little finger noise added. That's it.

When I used to live in the Caribbean, there was an old 2x15 cabinet that lived onstage at one of the clubs that literally had green mold growing on the cones from all the humidity over the years.

It wasn't my place to clean it, and it sounded fine all things considered . . .
