How do you date an old amp?

Sign in to disble this ad
Ampeg does not have a list of ser# to date anything. I might have (for real this time) a V4B head with the ser # 73724. Can anyone tell me what year it's from? It just went up on CL and hour ago and it is close to my home. I want it. Thanks

Nevermind, I just did a search and found that it's between 73'-75' based on the fact that it has black rocker switches and a plastic logo. I really hope I win this one......plus its cheaper than the the other one I was looking at. That guy never got back to me.

For the V4 there should be a tag on the inside with a date, either the one on the bottom of the head box or on the schematic attached to the top of the chasis. Other than that, you could check pot and transformer codes. It's usually easier to just classify these amps by the aesthetics though instead of taking the thing apart.
