How do you determine ohmage on unmarked cab?

Sign in to disble this ad
I fellow has an Eden 210XST I want to buy but the paper sticker that had the ohmage came off when he cleaned it and he's not sure what ohmage the cabinet is.
Anyone know how can we determine what it is? Would an 8ohm cab have (2) 16ohm speakers wired in parallel and a 4ohm cab have (2) 8ohm speakers? And would this be a sure thing that they would be wired parallel?
Is there any other way to test a cab without pulling the speakers?

Thanks!

First, it's impedance. Measure the DCR (resistance) of the cab with a DMM or volt/ohm meter, it will be roughly 0.6 to 0.8 times the impedance.

It's possible that an 8 ohm cab would have two 4 ohm speakers wired in series. Although most two-speaker 8 ohm guitar cabs I have seen do indeed have two 16 ohm speakers wired in parallel. (I only deal with 4 ohm bass cabs!)

Plug your speaker cable in the jack and put a meter(resistance) across the two sections of the plug. It may read slightly higher than say 4 or 8 ohms.
