Here's a trick for those of us who own older Peavey amps that will train your ears to learn those lower frequencies. Run a cable from the low output to the power amp in, then use the frequency controle to vary the tone. Then you will get a good simulation of old Gibson EBs or fender P with flats.

I can get a sound like it by muting with the side of my plucking hand and using my thumb. But, I can also get a similar sound with my index and middle fingers by using flats, even on my Jazz, and dialing out some high mids. The only thing is my LMIII's low mid control is centered at 360Hz. I do pretty good with it, though, to get the Motown electric or upright sound, even through my Markbass cabs. I thought about getting an eq pedal just so I could control the 100-200Hz range. The low control is centered arou 40Hz, which I consider too low. A pedal might help with that, too, and give me some control around, say, 60Hz. Something that helps my sound have a high edge is that I use my fingernails as well as the meat of my plucking fingers.

Just did a fun country gig last night with an artist named Mark Collie. Palm muting and plucking with the side of the thumb is the best way I know to get that understated yet thumpy sound. Personally never had much luck with a foam mute as I feel like they take the control away from the player, or maybe it's just me

I see players here in Nashville get a great country sound with every kind of bass, and every kind of string...it really is mostly in the hands, I think.

Last night I used a T-40 (with nickel round wounds) and my Blast Cult upright (with guts)...seemed to do the trick.

Ya, I've been able to get close to this hand muting. Sometimes I'll mute with the edge of my pinky, sort of rolling it around to find just the right spot that seems to be almost on top of the bridge, so I can still use a finger to pluck strings. Lets a little string attack through instead of making the whole sound a dull thud.

The guys in the video is just plucking normally though. Makes ya wonder about the foam mute.

As far as the amps go, I think these guys used whatever they had a deal with at the time and sounded pretty much the same through all of it.

@dukeofrock. Mark Collie's been around for quite a while. Must've been a fun gig.

It was. I've been playing with Mark, off and on for...gosh, at least 12 years. Everything from sold out arenas to little country bars with 50 people. He always does the same show, and always goes out on a limb. Did at least 3 songs last night that the band had never heard

Regarding the foam mute thing. I saw a buddy play two weeks in a row with the same Pbass and flats. The first week he used foam, the second week he didn't. Sounded nearly identical to me. Without the mute he just played with a super light touch and shortened his notes with left hand muting...you get really used to left hand muting if you play much upright in roots music

Well, I don't play upright and have never used a foam mute.

I do use my left hand to stop notes a lot though. Especially in country, but also other stuff too.
