How to get a 6x10 cab to 6 ohms

Sign in to disble this ad
Here is my project.

I have an opportunity to buy an Ampeg SVT610HLF cab
that has blown speakers for $50 bucks.
I'd like to put some speakers in it as inexpensively as possible and leave it at the club I play at every Saturday so I don't have to haul my SWR Goliath back and forth.

I priced the Ampeg 6ohm replacement speakers and they're rather expensive. I'd like to just buy some off the shelf 4 or 8 ohm Neo's
and call it a day.

My SWR SM400S can run bridged at 4 ohms at the lowest and it
does get quite hot. It runs my 8 ohm cabs much cooler.

Mark bass 610's are 6 ohms which would likely be fine for my
SM400.

Does anyone know how I might arrive at 6 ohms and how would
you wire it up.

Thanks,
Rick

Series/paralell bottom 4 speakers (8ohm drivers for 8ohm total), top two wired paralell (8ohm drivers for 4 ohm total). Wire the top two in series with the bottom 4?

4+4+4 = 12 ohms (3 in series)
In parallel with another triplet (4+4+4 = 12)

1/12 + 1/12 = 1/6

So put the left half in series, right half in series, then parallel the two sets.

For an even amount of power to each, just get 6 8Ω speakers, wire each pair in series, wire the three series pairs in parallel for a 5.3 ohm load. I can't see how 7/10ths of an Ω is going to make much difference.

BP102 legend Eminences would work, Eminence Basslite S2010's would be lighter. I won't even get into the whole neo vs. ceramic thing......

This doesn't get the same amount of power to each speaker.

This works.

If you have an easier time finding 8 ohm drivers you can wire the thing up for 5.3 ohms.
Code:

That sounds perfect.
Eminence speakers seem to be the most popular around here.
For this cab, which of these neo's would be the most appropriate.

1. Deltalite II 2510
2. Basslite CH2010
3. Basslite S2010

The Basslite S2010's are the least expensive but I wouldn't mind
spending a little more if the quality difference is worth it.

I am trying to keep my costs down as much as I can. I have friends
that play at this club as well and I'll probably let them use this cab
so they can lighten their load as well!

Thanks for the help guys,
Rick
