I want to know how to get this tone with my setup.

He uses a P-bass.

I use a jazz, 15" combo with 5 band EQ.

Thanks

new stainless steel strings, tube amp or preamp, use a pick, mike your cab, and have about $2,000,000.00 worth of studio electronics at your disposal.

Simple...

Cheers,
Cameron

Thanks.

I use a pick almost all the time.

Would the THIS or THIS work as a tube pre into the effects return?

What is your combo and with what EQ points or controls? We need to know what to tell you. P Bass with a pick. No tubes needed.

Ashdown EB180-15"

Bass +/-15dB @ 100Hz
Lo Mid +/-15dB @ 220Hz
Middle +/-15dB @ 660Hz
Hi Mid +/-15dB @ 1.6kHz
Treble +/-15dB @ 7kHz shelving

Deep +8dB @ 50Hz
Bright +10dB @ 10kHz

I have an out of phase switch on my bass if that helps.

And, with one of those pre's, will i get "that tubey goodness"?

Well, first thing's first since my little brother just yelled at me for playing bass....

Try boosting or cutting each frequency specifically and see if it takes you closer to that tone. I think it has a hump somewhere in the mids but I didn't get to do any testing since grouchy needs his 14 hours of sleep per day. (He doesn't even get out of bed until 3 pm!)

Haha... My first guess is to cut your mid control a bit and boost low/high mids a little.

The Art won't do anything for getting you closer to Mike's sound. I can tell you that.

It'd probably be a pretty subtle change if anything. I use one of the Art Tube pre's for recording (just to boost mic signal) and it doesn't do too much obvious signal coloring.

You really seem to want to get new gear, huh? All of these build and mod ideas. You must be dying to get something new.

Yeh, G-3 was it? The blonde and black one. Any greenday geeks know what he used during Nimrod?

Oh, afterthought, when tweaking EQ like I noted, use only the neck pickup. It's more toward his P Bassy tone.

dirnt may have used the gibson live for a little while, but almost all his tracks are cut on a precision.

Is there a pickup that sounds like a P, but will fit in a Jazz?

In a live environment you usually can't tell the difference between a P and a J neck pickup. That's why I said to use that.

You'll have a tough time getting there, but try running the front pickup only, roll a little bit of lows off the amp (disengage the Deep and Bright switches, too), boost your 660Hz and 1.6kHz a few dB, and either leave the highs flat, or cut a little, or turn down your tweeter if you have one.

Fresh stainless round-wound strings and a pick are essential for that sound. I hear a lot of upper mids, but not a lot of deep lows or extended highs.

Will it sound more close with the pickups in-phase or out-of-phase?
