I have a big rig, but find most of the time I don't really need it. A lot of our gigs I could get by with a good strong combo. Myself Ive been looking at either the TC BG500 210 are the Hartke LH500 H210. If your a combo user what do you use and why.

I use a Mesa Walkabout scout 12" on 90% of my gigs, sometimes add a scout 12" extension but its pretty rare.
I do have PA support in all my gigs.
Saying that i played yesterday evening without PA support in a 4 piece rock cover band and it was enough to fill the room at reasonable volume, not massive rumbling low end but good enough.

And as to why, my main transport are my feet and the London Underground so the smaller the better!

I never have PA support but I play through a pair of GK MB210s and don't need it (for the rinky-dink gigs I play).

All I've used at this point in time is a solid state Ampeg B3 combo- 150W, 4 ohms, 115- may upgrade at some point if the need arises.

I use two combos, a PJB Briefcase and a Markbass 151.
PJB for study and LARGE venues (XRL > PA and earphones for monitoring)
PJB and Markbass together for mid-size gigs. PJB as preamp.

I actually got rid of most of my big rig stuff and now play a Line 6 Lowdown 150, I love it. The amp tones are nice and can dial in almost anything! I do miss the sheer mass and volume of my big rigs but I don't miss hauling it around! I was pleasantly surprised at what this amp is capable of.

What Pasta said. My previous rig was a head and 2 cabs - one cab for rehearsal, two for gigs. But combos are good now too.

Most of the time I don't have PA support, unless where we play has it and thats rare.

I rocked an Eden Metro 210XLT for a few years, and while it sounded fantastic, it was much too big to be functional as a portable combo. Now for my portable rig, I use a Markbass LMIII with a Traveler 210 cab. If I need to walk, the amp goes in my bag and the cab gets strapped to a dolly (this method is surprisingly easy to get around!).

I have used a Roland DB 700 combo for 10 years in low to mid volume Blues band gigs, and could'nt be happier.

combos are great, especially if you do a lot of one nighters and don't need an svt's worth of volume. my main combo is a b-15n from 64, somtimes with two cabs, and up until monday i was doing a vt deluxe or modded british character pedal into the effect return of a crate powerblock and a b-15 cab for my micro rig, but now it's a micro vr stack, and it just may supplant my b-15 as my day to day rig. but yeah, if you don't need the big stuff, why not use a combo? as long as it satisfies you, the player, and has enough guns to cover your gig needs, that's all that's important.

When I don't need my big amp, or I just need a monitor while going through a PA I use my Markbass Minimark, either angled up at me with the amp sitting in a milk crate (works great! ) or on a tall restaurant food tray stand.

When I don't feel like hauling around my big amp I use my Peavey TNT115. It works great for small to medium gigs.

I use a Phil Jones BG800 Roadcase and/or a Phil Jones Suitcase for most gigs now. Gives me plenty of sound and beats lugging around 100+ bass cabs.

I will 2nd JDLowend's opinion. Although, I dont own my LD150 anymore, it was a great amp for my gigs. It has a direct out as well. I cant see walking any distance with this thing, but is a great combo. I think if I was to step into another giggable combo I would check out the Carvin MB12.

I've been back & forth between combos & components for years. I have a Carvin B1500 and a GK RB800 that I pair with an Epi UL310 & an Avatar Neo 212, but picked up a GK MB212 last summer, and that's all I use anymore. For both a loud classic rock band, and a smaller lounge-jazz band I'm in. More than enough sound, tone & power.
