How many players use a P.A. Head for a Bass Amp

Sign in to disble this ad
I had to put my amp in the shop, to get the pots clean. The guy said it would be a while since he was busy. So why it's in the shop I have been using a old Peavey XR-400 head 100 watts 4ohms it doesn't sound bad at all. So I was wondering how many players out there use P.A. heads on their cabs. You can find old PA heads cheap. Is this okay to do.

I do!

I'm a fan, especially with old tube PA's. You can usually get tube PAs for a STEAL when compaired to a simmilar Bass or Guitar head.

At one practice space i use an all tube Earth Stagemaster PA-2000 amp... which is preeeeeetty close to the Earth B2000 Super Bass head... which is preeeeetty close to the Sunn 2000s head.

Not mine, but here's someone else that uses the same head for bass:

I've also played out of, and HIGHLY reccomend, the old Fender PA-135 (and PA-100). They can be bought for pretty cheap if you can find them, they sounds great and crystal clean!!

I use one during rehearsal's so I don't have to haul my amp and cab around. pretty decent sound out of it. I wouldn't use it playing out, as I think it might fall apart if i attempt to move it from it current location. It's in pretty bad shape.

I don't think thats a PA-2000 head.

Looks more like one of these:

Plush: Photo Page 6

Either way... cool!

Hmmm... that's super cool!

I know the one i play is an Earth, same as the pic in my above post.... i just said 'PA-2000' after some minimal google searching

I'll snap some pictures next week. It really is a cool head. The break-up is really nice and warm.

Was there some cross pollenation between Earth and Plush? and is Earth the same as Earth Sound Systems?

I used a Crown PA amp for about three gigs while my regular amp was in the shop. I think it was 1 rack space so probably less than 500 watts bridged. I played in a 20+ member big band so I was able to get away with it. If it's just you and a few others I don't think you'd like the sound. You get plenty of punch but they aren't always a full-range amp. Probably fine for practice.

EARTH and ESR are the exact same copmany.

And Plush evolved into EARTH, and Earth is ESR. Earth Sound Research.

Plush made mostly Fender copies (or marshalls, close enough..)

And the Earth Superbass was more like a Fender Dual Showman than a Sunn 2000s, which it hardly resembles.

I have on occasion. I have a 1600W Yorkville head that I use one side of to run my Traynor YC-610. I use a VT Bass pedal as the pre and it rocks!

I played a Fender PA-135 head when I first started out on bass, I had some piece of crap cab and thought it was the heads fault so I sold it. I was a stupid dummy-head and know better now...

I've been using a Peavey DECA 700 for over 25 years. Sometimes as a bass amp, other times to drive monitors.

It sounds good and has never given me a problem.

I always travel with a combo mixer... normally a peavey ... normally an international (flight case type)

----

In reality there is VERY LITTLE difference between a bass head and a combo mixer head.

-----

Heck.. i"ll point out that I'll commonly use a bass head to power monitors...

There is VERY LITTLE difference

Heck for SS...
Not much difference between guitar heads and bass heads... the enclosure is the bigger difference.
