How much better will XS800 sound with new tube

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello folks,

I've got a Yorkville XS800 head which I've only had a few months and love dearly. Unfortunately as some have noticed the tube overdrive sound is rather, er, muddy. Muddy, but with a hard buzz. It's just not very musical to my ears.

I know that some have changed the preamp tube with good results. What I'm wondering is whether that change is transformative, or just a slight improvement. I'd like a smooth drive with good sustain, not too furry.

Or, would I be better off trying to get this sound with a pedal?

For reference, I'm playing a 70's reissue Jazz and occasionally an active Rockbass Corvette or a passive Spector in a country band. Back in the day I got the sound I wanted by running an active G&L through a hi-watt Peavy head into an 18, and a silverface bassman through a single 10 for the overdrive.

Thanks,
Dennis

I dunno but the one I had was smokin'! I loved that amp! Too bad I sold it (to a TB'r here) due to micro-amp G.A.S.! The stock tube sounded fine to me! I never brought it to overdrive my sound. I used just enough for it to warm up my sound and literally double the volume when it was engaged! If I find another on the cheap, I'm buying it!

Thanks for the response. I suppose it's possible that my tube (used amp) is past its prime. Can someone recommend a suitable replacement for the tone I'm after?

Thanks,
Dennis
