How much my head can handle?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a 4 ohm peavey head thats 200 watts and has a 700 watt peak. it puts 210 watts to each cabinet. its plugged into a peavey 412 cabinet that handles 200 watts. If I was to replace the old and dieing speakers with new ones that brought the watts to 800, Would I be harming my head?

Im sorry if this question doesnt make sense because im a huge noob when it comes to amps.

By underpowering your speakers, it won't hurt your head. Check the FAQ.

Dropping in speakers that weren't the original ones is a crapshoot. A cab is specifically designed around the speakers. Putting in some different ones---without modeling them to see how they'll perform---is a crapshoot. Might sound bad, might fart out, might even damage the speakers. Do so if you like to gamble.

Do a little research. If you can find out the excursion (D-max) of the current speakers and replace them with speakers of similar specs it should be OK, how they will sound is another question. Also, what is the ohms on the current cab. You mentioned the power on the original post and implied 2 cabs. Is this correct? If your Peavey head will only go down to 4 Ω (most older ones go down to 2Ω the newer ones IIRC will only go down to 4Ω) then you want to see how they're wired and what ohms each of the speakers are before ordering. Order the wrong ohm speakers or wire them wrong and you could fry your head very quickly. Bottom line, if you don't know what you're doing, don't.

Yes my head goes down to 2 ohms and the cab i believe is rated 200 at 4 ohms. i personally was just thinking of buying a new cab but my dad suggested a new set of speakers so im just seeing how itll work.

If it is a Peavey 412 and it is only rated for 200 watts it is a guitar cab so replacing the current speakers with speakers designed for bass will definately help just make sure the back of the cab is sealed and not open.

If it is a guitar cab, then you will really want to check your speaker specs. Most likely you will not get the desired result just by replaceing the speakers. Perhaps the sound you are not liking is due to you cab being a guitar cab?
