How simple do Bass amps get?

Sign in to disble this ad
I am coming from the guitar world, where you can have as little as a volume knob and be done. I notice that many of the basses have tone stacks built in, just like guitars.

My current top two choices are the Musicman Stingray and the P-Bass (I know they are completely different, but both have their own tone stacks).

So is there a one knob bass amp?

It's designed to be a power amp, but I think the SWR Amplite can be used as an amp on its own. Only one knob. I have no idea how this sounds, though.

Check out a Fender Bassman TV Ten amp. As simple as they come!

MarkBass MoMark makes a system that has a pre-amp knob and a master volume only.

I would imagine that most of them have preamps built into them. What you are looking for is a power amp on it's own.

But will the on board pre be enough to power the power amp? He might need a mini preamp in a box to set and forget.

Like an ART Tube MP to add some extra gain.

Electric Amp makes an amp called the Power Unit that's pretty minimal, just three knobs. I believe it can also be used purely as a slave amp, bypassing the internal tone circuitry entirely.

Here's a shot of Steve Albini's (Shellac) amp... I know he's the guitar player, but Bob Weston uses the same one. I know nothing about them except that they sound awesome.

Hartke's LH series amps have an old-school Fender-style tone stack. Aside from a brite switch and a compressor/limiter bypass, the only controls are volume, bass, middle and treble.

Alembic preamps are very similar but more expensive.

ART tube MP and power amp if you don't want any tone shaping. The ART preamp will run you about $30. It has a pre and post volume so you can add a little tube compression if you want

The Alessandro Basset Hound seems pretty simple.

That's a box with other pres and amps inside, a Tapco transistor preamp and a power amp are hidden in there. Looks super cool though I admit.

when all the knobs are on 10, its flat. Tone stack is passive and is cut only.

Cheers,

What do you mean by "tone stacks" most guitars have volume & tone knobs...that's it.

A P bass is usually a passive instrument, having a volume and tone knob. A Stingray has an active preamp...meaning it takes a battery to run and has the ability to adjust Treble, Mids, and Bass frequencies.

When you say they are completely different, yep you got that right. When you say they both have their own tone stacks, I'm not sure what you mean.

If you're planning to plug either of these basses right into an amp without a preamp, I don't think that is going to work for you. They just don't put out a strong enough signal.

No, not normally.

Also, P-basses, as well as most guitars and basses, don't really have "tone stacks." P-basses have a single passive (cut-only) tone knob, as well as a volume knob.

my fender musicmaster only has two knobs V/T. But I wouldn't recommend it for anything but practice(granted I love the tone)
