Is the HX410 too powerful for the LH500?

Sign in to disble this ad
The LH500 offers 500watts at 4ohm / 350watts at 8ohm
The HX410 says it handles 1000 watts at 8ohm

So does this mean the HX410 is not a suitable match for the LH500 because it can handle 650 watts more than the LH500 outputs?

What would be the proper cabinet wattage to get if I wanted to output a pair of of 8ohm cabinets?

Thats exactly what I use for my backup rig. Did you mean is the LH500 too powerful for the HX410, or are you worried the head won't have enough power to drive the cabinet?

Let me rephrase it - could I use a the HX410 (1000w / 8ohm) and also use the HX115 (500w / 8ohm) with the LH500 , and get the full power and capacity out of the LH500 amp? Should be more than enough volume to cut through the mix, correct?

Ok, I'm pickin up what you're puttin down now. Yeah, you could add the 115 to the mix and get the full 500watts out of the LH500. If I was planning on adding the Hydrive 115 to the 410 for my own rig, I would probably go with the LH1000 just to have the extra power and also you get the option to use the balance in dual parallel mode, but the LH500 cuts through the mix just fine for me.

I push my HX410 and VX410 with just my HA2500. That means each cabinet is only getting 125 watts, but no problems there. As long as you don't go overkill on your amps volume and cause clipping, your cabinets will be fine. I will be getting the new Kilo when it comes out in April so I will not have anymore power problems, EVER!

Cab watts are pretty much totally meaningless, so best ignoring it. Sensitivity sort of matters, but with 500w, it doesn't really. The Hydrive cabs (not sure which that is, I mean the half paper/half ali cones) are not very sensitive, so they need the power.

Cabs aren't powerful....amps are.

You can power your 1000 watt speaker with 1 watt if you want to. I've powered 120 watt speakers with 5 watt amps before and I've powered 100 watt speakers with 500 watt amps before and guess what?.....it worked both times.

Your problem with the proposed setup is not going to be total amp power, but very "unbalanced" cabinets. The 410, receiving the same power as the 115, will p!ss all over it, and you may even find that you're having to pull back on the volume to protect the 115 while the 410 has plenty left to give.

This is even before the very high likelihood of phasing issues -- see this thread (10s, 12s and 15s... OH MY!!!!) for some "real life" reportage of the problems mismatched drivers can cause.

You'd be better off getting two matching cabs instead of two different speaker sizes.

I use that exact combination now. (lh500 with the hydrive 410) I get GREAT tone and that sucker moves air. Match 'em up and see for yourself. You will not be disappointed.
