I blew a tweeter. Now what?

I guess "fried" would be more accurate, based on the crackling sound it was making. This rig is biamped, so my on-the-fly fix was to make sizzle cab the low end one.

Problem solved? I mean, my tone has changed. Not talking about that. This all begs the question whether a bass player needs a tweeter. Let's asume I can live with the sound. It's just my rehearsal space rig.

Can I play the cab with the fried tweeter (an Avatar B210) without hurting it? Does the fact that I am now sending only the lows to it matter/help? Does it matter what I set the tweeter knob to now? I think I have it at a little shy of all the way up.

I don't think you can run the Avatar cabs and the tweeters fully off unless you disconnect the crossover.

Fwiw, I run my Mesa PH412 with the tweeter all the way off and love the tone. I really dont think a tweeter is needed.

TY!

What'll happen if I keep on keepin' on? Might it hurt my power amp? I got my money's worth out of this poor cab years ago, and me opening anything electricity related is a guaranteed death sentence. For the cab at least.

Just disconnect the tweeter and you will get rid of the crackling sound. It does sound better without tweeters IMO. If you don't, it won't hurt your amp at all - but you will have that annoying crackling sound that I'm sure isn't the "sound" you are looking for.

Disconnect the filter and everything and wire the woofers straight to a jack, leave the tweeter in there to plug the hole.

If you're biamping this cab on the lowside, at common crossover points, it wouldn't be seeing any content where the tweeter plays anyway so it's a non issue. I'd disconnect the filter anyway, just to avoid a dumb mistake like firing it up with cables reversed, somebody bumped the knobs on the crossover, etc. You don't want to fry any more parts or end up having a funny load or a short connected to your amp.

Thanks, guys. Gonna leave well enough alone. The power amp's crossover is internal, and nobody touches that rig but me.

Thanks again!

You could probably replace it for not much $$$. I replaced some tweeters in an old PA cab from Parts Express. I had to use the new "speaker" magnet or whatever on the old plastic shell to make it fit in the cab, but it worked fine. I think I paid like $12 to replace both tweeters. Now the PA wedge hisses plenty

Depending on what type of crossover is used, it IS POSSIBLE to damage your amp. If you aren't going to fix it, disconnect the crossover to be safe.

It's a QSC GX3 solid state powah amp. QSC GX3 Stereo Power Amplifier and more Live Power Amplifiers at GuitarCenter.com.

Ya, I should have it fixed. I already fried the 1/4 inch input by plugging a powered-up amp into her. I only beat her because I love her.

But, being in the world's loudest country band, apparently, I'm thinking that my $ would be better spent on a bigger cab. She's only a 210 (with a 115 mate - I know, I know). I mean, if I had enough cab, I wouldn't have blown her in the first place.

This is a hypothetical question, to which the answer is no.

The filter on those is highpass only on the tweet, woofers fullrange but I'd disconnect it anyway. And yeah, you can get a replacement diaphram for cheap, don't have to buy a whole new tweeter, unless it's cheap too. If you have some other 8ohm tweeter laying around, you can just stick it in there, the filter will just be configured for 8ohms, nothing special.

And I say yes, a bass player does need a tweeter!

Why not just get it replaced. It shouldn't be very expensive and it's easy. And if you decide to sell the cab, at least it will be in complete working order.

DOH! Boy, did I get that wrong. Of course the answer is yes.

Hell, you've got a poweramp, use 3 or 4 15's if you need to and tweeters be damned. or

Anyone have some pics of them working on the crossovers to disconnect the tweeter (avatar would be great)?

No pics, but with a one-way filter like this, you'd simply remove the circuit board completely and wire the woofers up to the jack the old-fashioned way.
