I bought a Behringer 4x10 - head opinions

Sign in to disble this ad
for $120, how did I do? It's the BA410 model, 4ohm (wish it was 8) about 5 or 6 years old... not much wear and tear.

Thought is was a decent price.

Thoughts?

Also: cheap / good-ish head to pair with it for rock setting, one half stack, drums (you know the drill).

Thanks.

I think you overpaid by just a hair, but JMO.

I'd find an old Peavey or Carvin head, as many of those go to 2 ohms. That way you could add another 4 ohm cab if needed.

+1!

Finding one of these used for under $500 should be easy. I really dig any of the Mark # series from PV for straight up rock. Really clean and versatile. If you want to grind it up later, pick up a sansamp.

Hell, pick up a sansamp anyways.
I personally like the tone from my Mark VII, but a sansamp really lets you expand the tonal options.

BX4500H

I have the Behringer BX4500H head, which I tested with your cab when I bought it. Sounded good. 250 bucks now, I paid 225 which included a 2 year replacement warranty (recommended). It’s kind of heavy but it does the job and gets plenty LOUD. The SHAPE filter is nice, the Octave is rarely useful and the DEEP switch gets super fat (blow you speakers fat, be careful). They’re a good match. 132 reviews included, 4 out of 5 star average.

My feeling is it’s kind of silly to put an expensive head on the Behringer cab when you can get a solid match for 250 bucks. The added benefit is you piss off the gear snobs when they hear how good it sounds!

Found a used Behringer BX4500H head locally for $90, may go that route. But, I like possibly going with a Carvin BX500 because it will run safely at 2 ohm. I'd like to add a cabinet eventually.

Personally I would replace the Behringer cab with a different 410 before I would buy another cab to add to it... you will get alot more sensitivity, volume and low end before breakup with a slightly more quality cab (e.g. Avatar) than you would gain by adding a second cab to the Behringer cab.

Mine is a backup head but I used it for rehearsals for two years and it was a champ. At gig time I leave it in my car, just in case. It’s a quality sounding head. I brought it to a forum get-together and other bassplayer’s were like “hmmm…, that POS shouldn’t sound that good!”. Give that 90 head a good test run and buy it if everything works. If you upgrade later, you’ll have a decent backup and 90 bucks is rather painless.
There's no need to add another cab, IMO, cuz this head will drive that cab LOUD. Be aware though that using the DEEP switch at high volume may shred the speakers in that cab. Leave it off except at low volumes. I left it off all the time.

Yeah but nice cabs are real bad pricey dough.

$3/inch of speaker surface is what I'm talking about.

These cabinets are by far under rated. I had two 4 ohm models that I punished severely for two years with out any issues. And this was with the Behringer BX4500H head. The Bugera aluminum cone speakers were great for outside venues. I still have 4 brand new speakers I'm looking for a cabinet to put them in. You paid a fair price for the one you got

So you think the BX4500H will keep up with a guitar half stack and drums decently?

Yes. I also have used that head and it performed very well, and was quite loud.

and...

I used mine with a single 8 ohm, DB1260 cab and it kept up with a 3 piece rock band. With both of my cabs, the head never had to go past 4 on the volume. He should get similar volume with the 410.
Here’s the thing, paying 90 bucks for the head (assuming it works) gives him a complete rig for 220 bucks. He could use it for a year (or two) and likely sell the whole rig for 250 – 300 bucks if he so chooses. It’s a no brainer, IMO.

I agree with all of this. I've been using a 3000T Behringer head for at least 7 years w/o any issues. I use a Carvin 410 RL cabinet or just a 115 cabinet. It is plenty loud. I own a Carvin B1500 head which I bought new which I never use since the Behringer does all I need. I was planning on using the Carvin head when the Behringer head finally failed. I'm still waiting.

I'd just point out that if you're looking to buy Behringer/Bugera new a good place to shop is Welcome to Sweetwater.com | Call Us @ 800 222 4700

They don't list every B* product, but if you call they might sell it.

The extend the warranty to 2 years.
I would only do lightweight gear since the second year shipping is on you.

Think about pre-amp, amp combo.

An 7lb iNuke Behringer iNUKE NU1000 | Sweetwater.com for $200 and a good pre-amp or pedal would be a good light weight alternative. Notice though they sold out of the iNukes for now.

Bass V-amp Pro is a good pre-amp. See other threads in this forum. You'd have both iNuke and V-Amp for less than $400 new with warranties easy.

In Australia, I believe a bearing bass head is around the 500 mark, and the cabs the same. $120 is nothing.
