I feel a SVT4pro may be overkill.

I am looking at an SVT4 Pro because I love the tones one can get of the things but I feel it may be overkill for what I am currently doing (practicing in an apartment and small bar gigs) so my question is what kind of amp (head or combo) do you guy think would be better suited for my needs but still have similar types and range of tones as an SVT 4 Pro?

The 4 PRO does have a volume knob on it and extra headroom is always a good thing! You would be better off just getting the the 4 PRO and just using different cabs with it. You can play the 4 PRO into a small cab, just watch the volume and don't boost the low end like a maniac. No matter what you get, you are still going to want the 4 PRO, right? It's a no brainer.

The 7 PRO sounds VERY similar to the 4 PRO. The 3 PRO sounds VERY similar to the 2 PRO at lower volumes and captures some of that Ampeg tube growl.

Shameless plug.

Love the amp, but need something more switchable for my ERB.

Get the 4PRO. I've been using one for years & I've owned/played dang near everything out there. I keep going back to the 4PRO. It can be played through a single 10" speaker to 8-10" speakers & any combo in between. If you ever join a band & start playing out the 4PRO is the best thing ever. 1600 Watts Mono-Bridged @ 4 Ohms (1200 Watts Continuous) 1200 Watts Mono-Bridged @ 8 Ohms (900 Watts Continuous) 2 x 900 Watts @ 2 Ohms (600 Watts Continuous)2 x 625 Watts @ 4 Ohms (490 Watts Continuous) 2 x 350 Watts @ 8 Ohms (300 Watts Continuous) this baby can do anything!

^ Or 32x10's. It could power two 810's on either side if you wanted it to and still get A LOT of bump from it. (That'd be 450w/cab where as my SVT-II does 300w.) I've never needed more than my SVT-II has to offer but hey, some people do...
