i have a power supply what next?

i've recently decided to build a my own rack rig
unfortunatly this is something i know sod all about i get the basic idea dont get me wrong but i'm not sure what i need or why

anyways i know one thing for sure i need a power amp to power the speakers so i've just landed a nice beat up C Audio SR 404 for the right price now all i need to know is what comes next?
do i need a preamp or will any standard EQ work?
is there anything in particular i need to avoid?
is there anything i simply MUST have in a rig?

etc etc....

dont be shy about stating the obvious i'm a total noob with this stuff usually i just by an all in one amp and plug it in

oh and i'm building on a budget so dont start throwing names out for £3,000 rackmount toys as i cant afford them but i can do better than behringer and citronic

Essentially, all you need is a preamp and a poweramp. Everything else is gratuitous.

awesome ive been checking out a Trace Elliot GP12XV for a preamp looks like this rig might be ready sooner rather than later cheers dude!
