so i have this gibson SG guitar that i never play. it just sits in its case in my closet. i dont play guitar anymore (i had a couple years there where i thought i was a guitar player but had to switch back to bass because i feel no creativity on guitar). now this is a US gibson SG in really good condition. i'm sure i could get a pretty penny for it on a trade in on a new bass amp. not sure what to do. any guidance? |

You aren't going to agree with this at first, then reality will slowly set in.

If a new one sells at MF for $1,500, expect them to offer you about $500.

You could sell it yourself, of course, but there's rules here about saying you have something for sale if you're not a paid subscriber.
People have described Guitar Center's trade-ins, and it seems like a really good way to go with cheap gear (cuz you wouldn't get much selling it at its full value, and they give you a 15% discount on the new gear you're buying).
With your SG, economically you'd do well to sell it yourself. It's a common, top brand, quality instrument, so buyers will instantly recognize it and can figure out its worth. |

| | | | Here's how it works on used gear, when it comes to trading it in, folks. Your friendly musical instrument retail purveyors usually use a blue book style guide that puts the various factors together of year and model, grade of condition, etc, and you get half of the suggested value. So if if you come in with a 19xx-20xx, whatever, and the book, or what other reference guide or service they use, says it's worth 600 bucks, you are gonna be offered 300 bucks trade in value. That's how it's done in most shops. You are always better off trying to sell used gear yourself, or working out a deal with a shop to sell it on a consignment deal.

| | | | I just got rid of my one and only guitar (Fender strat) for that exact same reason. Different people have different opinions, but for me, if I'm not going to use something I would just as soon sell/give it to someone who would appreciate it and use it. That being said, a Gibson SG is a very, very cool guitar and would be one of the only guitars that I would keep and hang on a wall rather than sell. |

Really cool guitar and it sounds great plugged straight into an amp, but the only problem is I don`t even own a guitar amp to play it out of! I`ve considered selling it for years but never could because it was my first "good" instrument. That said, if someone offered me a used StingRay HH 5er it`d be hard to say no |
