I may have broken my GK400rb

I hadn't moved the old girl in a long time (no gigs for a while). Then my wife convinced me to play a low key gig doing Hawaiian music for her Hula group (she was born/raised in Hawaii).

The amp worked great a week ago for my normal practice (as it had for many years). Got to the gig, plugged everything in and turned on the amp. Large BRRRRRPPPPPP sound immediately came from the speakers. I shut off the amp and tried it again, now with the master turned all the way down. Exact same issue.

Since we were plugged into someone's porch outlet, I thought perhaps it was some power issue (although the PA was working fine). I set the amp aside and used my emergency backup DI box to go into the sound board.

Got it home last night, set it up, plugged it in and turned it on. Same exact result. I left it on to see what would happen and it blew the fuse (I assume, haven't checked) after about 3 seconds. No fireworks, smoke or funny smells, just dead.

One thing that happened recently was a few weeks back, the klutz in our band (there's one in every band right? Tripping over cords, spilling beer, dropping ****) stepped on my bass lead and it nearly yanked the amp off the cab. For a few minutes after that, the input jack worked intermittently and crackeled like crazy. Then it seemed to work alright if we didn't move the lead at all. After practice that night, I opened it up and fiddled with the input jack. It didn't seem broken or anything and the amp worked fine after I put it back together (and for another 2 practice sessions).

Anyhow, just wondering if this sounds like a familiar situation to anyone.

Only way to find out, take it in to a qualified amp tech, and pay the bench fee. Good luck.

+1 sorry but it's Tech Time!

Let us know what your problem was after you get it fixed.

Yeah, I figured it was tech time. I'm heading there on Wednesday.

I opened it up - no burn marks, looks pristine. The fuse was definitely blown.

I'll definitely stop back and post the diagnosis/outcome.

With the admittance that there could be a known issue due to the amp being almost yanked off... not sure the thread title is fair... something dieing and something failing because of damage are different things.

Turns out the power supply went belly up. It did actually die. I never meant to imply GKs were anything but tanks. This is the first service I've had to do on this thing and I'm sure it's 20 years old if it's a day. I got my money's worth out of this amp years ago.

Either way, it's working great now and I hope it goes another 20 years.
