Hi, new to the forums but ive been reading them for a few months this is my first time to chime in. I am looking at getting a gig rig and need a little advice. I am looking for a 4 10's set up and i got about 1000-1200 dollars to spend, I have considered the marshall mb450h setup up and as well Ampeg B2RE/SVT-410HLF rig in that range.... what else is out there? I use alot of wah and effects such as bassballs and a nice lil flanger and distortion. Basically i need a very versatile rig. |

But more info is key:
1) Genre of music - do you need to compete with a Marshal stack or not?
2) Do you have access to decent music stores or a used-gear community?

| | | | I'd skip both the Marshall MB450 and Ampeg B2RE. The B2RE is kinda sterile, underpowered for its rating, and overpriced, and just generally not a good value. The MB450 is kind of in that same vein, it sounds kinda sterile too, but better priced than the B2RE so its a better value. The SVT 410 HLF is a good cab if you don't mind an overall boomy tone.
With 1200$, I'd say look into a GK 700 RB-II and one of GKs or SWRs less-expensive 410 cabs. A used Ampeg cab can always do the trick as well. There are so many Ampeg cabs around that they pop up used quite often. |

Another option would be a Hartke LH1000 head with a Hartke Hydrive 4x10 cabinet.

Aside from going the all tube route, there's really no reason to buy a new amp that weighs more than about 8 lbs. I have the Ibanez Promethean which I love and use actively. The Genz Benz Shuttle series and now Streamliner are also great amps. TC electronics, Gallien-Krueger, SWR, Orange and even Ampeg all have class D micro amps available now. Save a couple hundred bucks and shop the classifieds here. Most people will ship a micro head. Then use your savings to either buy the brand matching cab, or other such as an Avatar. |

The Genz Benz Streamliner 600 or 900 will be coming up for sale on the TB classifieds soon, that will give you everything you want in a head. Clean funk tone, dirty psychedelic tone and anything in between at any volume level you choose. Check this out with a good set of muffs ... http://www.youtube.com/user/BassGuit.../0/d-27szg61bw
It is also only 6.5 Lbs and puts out 600 or 900 watts @ 4 Ohms. I am pretty sure you won't need anything but this in your future. The 900 sells for $750 new so you should probably get a used 600 for $500. And that leaves room for you to get a Uber 2x12 or anything that you want actually! Best of luck. Cheers.
