I Need Loud and Light

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm playing classic rock with a loud guitar and a drummer. My Ampeg BA115 isn't cutting it. Looking at the GK mb212 and Carvin combo 500 watt 2x10. I'm old enough to find the <40lbs of the GK very appealing.

Any thoughts? Have the early problems been resolved with the Carvin and GK? Any other loud and light combos I should listen to?

thanks for your help

If the band is as loud as you seem to indicate, a combo probably isn't the best solution. I would just bite the bullet and find a 4x10 you like(there are lightweight ones available from several brands) and a head, 300-500 watts will do fine.
My personal fave rig is a GK800RB into a SWR Golight 4x10. Loud as heck, sounds great, easy to schlep.

Except for maybe the 212 it sounds like you're out of combo territory unless you graft a microhead onto a bfm horn cab.

"GK800RB into a SWR Golight 4x10"

This should do the trick nicely. My rig is a GK 1001RB into an SWR 6x10 and it's MORE than loud and clear enough.

I say Hartke LH500 into a HyDrive 410. The HyDrive series are very light and loud cabs.

I know you are looking at other brands, but my light rig is a Markbass LMII (500 watts) into an Ampeg 210AV. The head is 6 lbs and the cab is around 25 lbs. This works great in a classic rock band with two loud guitarists, loud drummer, keys and loud singer. I usually have PA support though, but I use this in practice and its fine.

If you need loud and light then step one is buying a cabinet for loud and light. My first recommendation is going to be for a Genz Benz Neo-X cabinet. I have a 1x12 GB Neo X in my rig and I love it. Overall just solid cabinet and light as all get out. I think I might eventually trade my warwick 211pro for another one of those 1x12's for a matched stack. Anyway 2 of those cabinets will probably blow you away volume wise even with just a 200 watt head pushing them. GB makes a Neo-X that is a 2x12 at 4 ohms (the 1x12's are 8 ohms) so if you don't need modular then that would be better one stop shopping, but if you want to expand on it you will need a head that is stable at 2 ohms.

I played through a BA-115 a couple times, no wonder you can't hear anything.. I had everything dimed and a not-so-loud drummer drowned me out..

An idea for a loud/light combo.. an airhead fEARful 12/6...

GK makes a Neo 212 that's got a reputation for being loud and light. I can attest to the fact that it's light--only 50.5 pounds, and with good handles. How loud it is compared to other cabs is another thing. It definitely beat my old GK 210 MBE cab, tone-wise and volume-wise--but that's to be expected.

I'm tentatively planning on getting a second one if I don't opt instead to mix cabs and go for their Neo 4x10.

I'm gonna second the BFM (billfitzmaurice ) suggestion. I have 2 omnitop 15s and I push 250 watts to each with an swr400s. Just to see what would happen I bridged my amp into 1 cabinet.....it was loud enough to gig with just 1. I would never think a single 15 could do this
