The title pretty much says it all. I'm a musician on a budget and I NEED that clear, punchy, gut-rumbly sound, but don't have $1,500 to spend on a Markbass amp. What do I do?! Any advice is much appreciated.

Buy a used LittleMark II

/SHAMELESS PLUG

Then pretty much any solid cab with the tweeter somewhere between 10% and 50% and you should be good to go. My Hartke HX410 sounds sweet with those settings and I've heard great things about avatar cabs.

You can often find a used MarkBass LMII/III on the TB classifieds for $400-$450.

The other thing is that the LMII sounds great with virtually all cabs. I've used mine with probably a dozen major brands and its always sounded great.

Recently I've fallen in love with mine all over again.

I know your pain. When I was young and working my way thru school, what I made at my mall job wouldn't afford me a nice rig.

...so I went out with what I had, and earned my nice rig playing and not blowing my gig earnings on booze-n-hookers.

It can be done.

Open a savings account.

Are you cool with used gear? If so, you can score some good deals. What is your budget?

+1 on buying used LM 2. Or check out the Carvin BX500.

+1 to the LMII/III sounding great with almost any cab. Since it's so transparent, I can really hear the differences in cabinet voicings.

Look for a used Little Mark then pick a cab or two and go!

Buy the super booster pedal and use it as a preamp.

+1 for used little mark II. I paid $500 canadian - Markbass prices are definitely inflated up here too. As previously stated, sounds great through any decent cab I've paired with it. I actually strongly dislike makrbass cabs - you're probably better off through something else.

Avatar is a great option if you want to go new. You could compomise with a used 115 from a reputable brand for 250-300 - then add a 210 or 410 down the line if you need it... get on craigslist, go to your local used store, do some wheeling and dealing. You definitely don't need $1500 for a killer markbass rig, particularly if you stay away from their over-priced cabs.

+1!

Go used and pick up a LMII or III for about $450. Now the cabs are a different story, but IMHO are worth every penny if you can find them used just for the weight alone.

If it doesn't have a warranty I would steer clear of Markbass stuff used. It's expensive to fix. Oftentimes more expensive than the whole amp would be. In a foreign country I would be twice as wary of used Markbass stuff.
