The need to fund some new recording gear has forced me to sell off some of my gear. I came to a point where I needed to make some significant decisions about which major pieces I was going to keep, and which ones needed to go.

Last night, I played my SVT-CL for the last time before I sent it to a new home.

The bright side is that it appears to be going to a place where it will be well-loved and well-used.

It only hurts me to let go of gear that's customized or really rare AND great.

SVT-CL amps are very common and easy to find. Don't sweat it. You could possibly get another one later on.

Still its hard to sell great gear. I sold off a pair of Mesa 115 cabs this year and an Accugroove Tri115 and even though I still have too many cabs, it was painful!

I sold my Acoustic 370 that I played for years and years. I wanted to downsize (especially weight) and modernize but it was a tough decision to part with. Wish I coulda done both, but sometimes you've got to choose.

I've owned and sold a lot of great gear, even the 'rarest' particularly good years Ampeg stuff I owned, and a few vintage synths are readily available. So I've never looked back. Sold the stuff cause it was time to move on. I seem to get the 7 year itch with gear, longest I've owned anything was 12 years. Shortest about 4 years. I do buy stuff I like.

After selling a car that I really dug, the broker told me this:

"Never love something that can't love you back."

i once traded in my trusty avatar 410 cab so that i could afford a "much nicer" ampeg one. felt absolutely terrible about it, and when i got the new cab to practice i realized that it didn't sound good at all with a band. it was a real "WHAT HAVE I DONE??" moment as i looked back on all the asskicking i had done with the avatar, and how puny the ampeg sounded in comparison...for those wondering, the legends about avatar speakers are true. i went back the very next day, dumped off the ampeg and got my avatar back. most people don't get sentimental about speaker cabs, but mine is irreplaceable because of all it's been through with me. fortunately i've never been forced to sell gear, because i think it would be a real heartbreaker for me.

Hey, it's a CL...not like it's a 69 Blueline with 6146b's CL's are way common if you ever want another one. Sucks to sell great gear but you're not hurting too badly for that, and everyone can use the money in this economy, so I approve.

Like you care

Had to do that recently with my all valve Trace Elliot V4. It was my world! However, no more lumping it about with the Ampeg 810 has made Andy a much less knackered boy! Also, my Hartke LH1000 and AK410 cab has really cushioned the blow!

This thread is timely. After work today, I'm taking a bunch of guitar gear to Guitar Center to sell. I spoke with the manager yesterday and he seemed interested in buying it all and even gave me a ballpark figure (pending him checking it out, of course) on what he'd give me for it (quite reasonable).

One of the items is a Marshall JVM410H head, which two years ago, was the top of the line Marshall. Ever since I started playing guitar, back in the Hair Metal 80's, I always dreamed of owning a top of the line Marshall. But I could never come close to affording it.

Two years ago I bought myself a birthday present; the Marshall. And then on a whim I bought a bass. You know the rest of the story. Selling this gear will pay for the fEARful 15/6/1 kit I just bought. Very similar to your situation, EricF. If you sell gear to fund a new gear purchase, the new gear is free, in theory.

I will miss the Marshall only b/c it is the symbol of a small dream come true for me. The reality is that it hasn't been played in two years and is worth a lot, so it's gotta go.

I'm trying to sell my SVT-2Pro/SWR stack....kind of forced to since I'm working on moving to a different state and got bills to pay. The 2-Pro is the amp that I fell in love with in 1994 and finally bought in 2006. Barely used it, never outside of the house...it's kind of a big paperweight while being in my posession. I think my live-playing days are pretty much over...especially those that warrant a stack such as this. If I ever play live again, I highly doubt it will be anything bigger than a coffee-house gig.

The only piece of gear I really wish I had never sold is my early 90's 52 reissue telecaster.

I sold it to buy a lakland, which I ended up sellign within a year. I now have nothing to show for it. it was the best guitar I have ever played.

It's tough to sell something you're emotionally attached to. It's definitely a man-thing though. I've never seen a woman attached to "stuff." We love our gear, our car..."stuff."

One of my prized possessions is mid-80's Ovation shallow-bowl guitar copy. It says "Applause" on the headstock...I think it was Ovation's "Squire" basically. It's probably worth twenty bucks, but it was the first nice guitar I owned and has been around the world with me through thick and thin. I've jammed with people that are no longer on this earth with that guitar. I'll never sell it....not that it's worth anything anyway. LOL!

You will get three times as much money if you list it on craigslist and sell it yourself. GC pays very poorly for used gear, slightly better, and I mean slightly, if you are trading it in on something new. Sell it yourself
