I want an Ampeg SVT tube, but I found an Eden on sale...

Sign in to disble this ad
I currently play an Ashdown ABM EVO II C410T combo, and while I like the sound, I really like the Ampeg SVT-CL.

That said, I recently found a new Eden WTB300V for $785, and I'm wondering if this amp is even comparable to an Ampeg. I've searched the forums here, and found a little info, but does anyone have experience with this amp? Can I even get close to an Ampeg sound? I'm mainly looking for the deep low end, the syrupy sound.

Thanks for any help!

Im no expert but I think it does the clean pillowy bass thing better than the SVT, which is supposed to be more grindy, suitable for rock music.

You may have found the right answer

The Eden could actually be better for the sound you want, it's hard to know by just the words "deep" and "syrupy". The classic Eden sound and the classic Ampeg sound are very different--you may be able to cop some Ampeg sounds with that Eden head, or vice-versa, but I would not go into that deal thinking the Eden is good for "the Ampeg sound". Try the Eden out and see if it sounds the way you want; for all you know now, maybe you want an SVT and maybe you don't.

Yeah, but second best is about a thousand dollars less Scotte. That's a lot less if I can get a warm, deep tone.

I play a Lakland US Glaub using flats, and I really like the deep tone. If I can get that for $1,000 less, why not?

You make a good point Bongo.

Disregard the Ampeg. I want deep bass, warm mids, and no need for punchy treble. I play a Lakland US Glaub using flats. I play with fingers mostly, so not a lot of bright punch, and not a need for it. I want the warm, smooth, and distortion free sound (for the most part, a little grind sometimes is needed).

The deal is, I don't have access to a Eden head, so I would be buying this blind. I think it's a good deal, but only if the head can deliver on the sound I described above.

Both excellent amps that are very different...You could add a VT pedal to the Eden....but if you really do want an SVT...you'll probably still want one after you buy the Eden.

I've learned the hard way that a good deal coming along should never derail Plan A....because Plan B will very often just be a waste of time and money that only delays Plan A.

But as Bongo said....you may not want an SVT....but chances are you probably do if you think you do.

You have a very good amp you like already....use it well until you can afford what you really want.

That's the thing, I can afford either. But, I don't want to ignore an amp that may very well have what I need at a much lower price.

So, throw out the Ampeg. Can I get deep bass and a warm mid tone that's clean with the Eden?

Where can you find this Eden new for under $700?? Any other available??

BTW, Eden sounds like something you should look at. Your descriptions on sound dont really plumb up with the name SVT.

Once I get to the bottom of the tone question, I'll be happy to pass on my find! I don't want you vultures swooping in and stealing my head

I may have changed the settings on the Ampeg enough to get the Eden sound, lol.

that eden head was made by a budget amp company named smarvo, and sold under the name fame and smarvo in other countries. eden had them do a few tweaks to the preamp and cosmetics, though. i've not played them but i hear they're pretty good sounding. they sell for $1400 new so i guess that's a reasonable used price (edit: $695 new you say? got to admit that's a good price). but i've played a lot of tube amps, and i've yet to find what i like about the svt in any other amps, so i say if you like the svt sound, don't screw around

jimi, no offense but i totally don't get the idea that the svt is only good for dirt. the whole idea behind the creation of the svt was to put 300w of clean tube power into an amp. the best clean sounds i've ever experienced were with svt's and b-15's. and yeah, they will sound great cranked and it's sort of become the amp to crank if you can get away with those levels, but they easily do clean tones, and i think they get a bum rap on not being able to do the clean thing by players these days. of course they can do clean and loud...that was the whole reason they were invented.

No, its not close to an Ampeg. I'm an Ampeg kinda guy and also picked up the Eden for a sweet deal to check it out. If you can afford either go for the Ampeg, used won't be considerably more really. Later, if you want to explore other amps, go for it. The Ampeg will be your benchmark.

The price I'm quoting is for a brand new Eden WTB300V. I can get it shipped free for $685. Can I get the sound I'm looking for from it?

Oh I know an Ampeg can do pillowy soft, its just typically not what I think of when I first hear the term SVT. Sure theres exceptions to all of this...... both amps could prob. emulate each other to a degree or another.

I also said I was no expert!

Anyone have any idea where I can find some sound clips of the Eden? I've looked and I can't find any.
