I wonder how this would work for bass?

I subbed on drums at a church today. They had a Roland electronic kit with a Simmons DA 200 amplifier. I was really knocked out by the sound of this little combo amp!

E-drums have line level outputs, so the output signal on a bass may not match the input on this amp unless the bass has an active preamp, either onboard or outboard.

An instrument preamp usually puts out instrument-level signals, not line level.

I'd be concerned about the level of real bass you could get out of that 12" sub with only 100 watts going to it. It'd need to be really sensitive to balance with the 6's and tweets which are getting 50 watts each. I'd be curious about the crossover points (if there are such) too. It might be that the 12 being a downfiring speaker is being run fullrange with the highs and mids-- which are directional-- being "filtered" out. Still, try it an see what happens. Get a line driver like the one from MXR or the SD Pickup Booster and see what kind of tones you can get from the one at church.

I was thinking about the sort of outboard preamps that drive a power amp. I use a Presonus Tubepre in that fashion. Also, some active onboard preamps can drive a power amp. My G&L's (one Tribute, one US) can drive my Crown DC-300A, although I don't think I'm driving it to full output.

Yes, a standard preamp would work. But you had mentioned an active bass, which usually wouldn't.

I doubt a normal active bass would put out nearly enough level to drive a power amp to full output. If it did, it would overload virtually every standard instrument amp.

Just because it sounded good for some electronic drums doesn't mean it's going to make a good bass amp. I like the sound of my friend's tiny terror set up but it doesn't mean I'm gonna be using it for bass anytime.
