Ibanez P5110 w/ extension cab

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello, long time lurker here but my first post. I'm looking at getting a new setup for practice and the occasional party/bar gig. Our band plays modern/indie rock with the occasional classic rock tune thrown in and consists of a bass player (me), two guitarists playing through valve 2x12's (marshall, fender twin), plus a vocalist and a reasonably hard hitting drummer. I currently play through a borrowed 300 watt Trace Elliot head into a Trace 2x10 that seems to have enough power and volume for the type of gigs we do.

I've been looking at the the Ibanez P5110 combo and am wondering if anyone has any experience running it with an extension cab and could suggest something that would complement it well. I am aware of the P110C which I am considering as an option but would like to know if anyone has successfully coupled the 110 combo with a 1x15. At least on paper, this seems like a great setup for me as it would give me a lot of flexibility.

I'm also considering the GK MB210 so any thoughts on how the two compare would be appreciated. I am in Munich, Germany and having trouble finding either of these combos in stock locally to test. I play a Peavey T-40 and an SX P bass copy.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Well, this is not directly on point, but I have a P5210 combo, and it is extremely loud for a compact 2x10 rig. In fact, I believe that I could probably cover most of my gigs with this head (FWIW, one guitar player, and a relatively quiet drummer). That being said, for our larger gigs, or outdoor gigs, or any time where I don't have good PA support, this rig might not be quite enough, and I would think that a P5110 with a similar size extension cab would fare similarly.

On the whole, though, the Promethean head and combos are very impressive, in my book.

If 300W and a 2x10 is enough for you (i.e. the TE head and cab), then I would think the Promethean with 2 10s, putting 500W through them should also be enough for you....

OTOH, the new cost of the Promethean 1x10 extension cab looks like about USD$350, street price. For that, you could get a bigger, used 2x10 cab. That's about what I paid for my Aguilar GS210 cab (used, in mint condition).

You could use the Promethean 1x10 combo for practice and then just pull the amp head and use it with the 210 cab for gigs. Plus, if you go that route, it gives you the option to add yet another extension cab for even bigger gigs. That's the route I've taken, anyway. I got the Aguilar 210 and an Aguilar GS115 (both 8 ohms). With my Promethean combo, I now have the options of just a 1x10 setup, just a 2x10 setup, or 2x10 + 1x15 setup. The latter, with 500W pushing it should be more than enough for any gig. If more is needed, it should be handled by DI to FOH PA.

Thanks for the replies guys. I am leaning towards the route StuartV suggests and going with the promethean P5110 combo plus getting an extension cab. I've ruled out the P5210 as it isn't available locally to try and I think I could benefit from a bit more flexible setup. Used options are pretty limited where I am but I am keeping an eye out. Any thoughts on pairing the 110 combo with the GK Neo 112-II?
