Ibanez Soundwave Hiss: Plan of Attack.

Sign in to disble this ad
My 35W Ibanez Soundwave combo amp has been producing a ridiculous amount of hiss anytime the master volume knob exceeds a quarter of the turn (9:00?), regardless of any EQ settings, position of the "Level" (gain) knob, or whether or not an instrument is plugged in. After the 9:00 position, the hiss increases and decreases in accordance with the knob's setting. I've isolated the source of the problem - the master volume - but I'm not sure what specific flaws in the circuitry would cause hiss of that nature, so I've been leery of opening it up and going to work with my soldering iron.

To you amp gurus, does this sound like a bad or dirty pot, in which case I should replace it or clean it with contact cleaner, or is it possible that wiring irregularities like cold solder joints in between the pot and the speaker output would cause this anomaly?

Thank you for your time.

Never mind; situation under control. If a mod could delete this thread in the interest of saving space, that would be appreciated. Thank you.

Maybe you could tell us what the issue was. It might help others who may have the same problem. The amp could just be naturally noisy which is also a good thing to know if it is true.
