Idea For My Next Rig

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi everyone I am pretty young but I also like the idea of class D power amps and Neo Speakers. My current rig is a GK 400rb that I am borrowing from my uncle and a GK glx 2x10 one of the speakers in the gk may be busted. it occasionally makes a strange sound that leads me to believe the voice coil warped and is rubbing up against something in a funny way. For my next rig this is what I am Considering:
-a Carvin BX 500
-An Avatar B212 (4 ohm)
-An Avatar B112 (8 ohm)
I feel this would be good as all of those products are pretty light in comparison to my current bulky speaker. The Carvin is really portable so I could bring it from home to practice with the 112 at home and the 212 at my drummers. At bigger shows I could use both. Bass Player Mag claims there 212 is louder than there 410 does this mean i could get the volume of an 6x10 through this rig? one thing i worry about is price. As i said Im pretty young im in high school. One thing thats a problem with this rig is these products don't seem to go used much. Also both of these companies are internet based, everyone seems to love there products but I prefer to try things out. Tell me if this sounds like a good rig.

Get 2 or 3 8 ohm 112's instead of a 112 and 212. That's what I'd do; more versatility that way. Or 2 8 ohm 210's. Or get LDS or someone to make you a couple of 115's or 112's using Kappalite 3015's or 3012's. Cheers!

I don't see much difference between the OP's idea and yours. He can gig one, two, or three 12s. The 212 will be a bit more of a lug than a 112, but he's talking neos, and he's young. And there's the convenience and cost savings of one cab vs. two.

Govier966: I think you've got a good plan. You'll have to engage the 2 ohm switch on your amp if you run both speakers, since your nominal load will be 2.7 ohms.

You have your impedances right. Each twelve will get around the same power. You will have to engage the 2Ω switch as 1n3 said.

Okay glad to know im right with the loads, i was really confused by impedance until i got the formula. Now I know both of these brands have great reputations on both TB and many other sites for sounding great being durable and keeping the price low. The thing i worry about is trying them out. Does anyone know stores in NY that would have these brands?

use em

I have the 4 ohm neo 2x12 and 8 ohm neo 1x12 cab on top of it at our rehearsal space and they go plenty loud. They could handle most medium size clubs plus. I gig with something else but we are talkin a lot more money new than Avatar. They used to list scratch and dent new stuff on E-bay and their website, so look into that. My 1x12 was a scratch and dent off their website. Had to look pretty hard to find the defect but saved some bucks. Search Avatar on e-bay and look for Dave as the seller. That's factory new with a little Oops ding in it for less dollars. I can't speak to the Carvin head cause I sent the one I bought when they 1st came out back for a refund due to problems you can research here on Talkbass. I presume they have resolved them. I still resent the fact I had to pay return shipping when they continued shipping out defective product weeks after being alerted to problems.
They did not send me a return shipping label or refund my shipping. I am a big fan of another amp company for life after being treated the direct opposite. Not a post bashing Carvin though but just telling you those cab choices work fine for me and how to get em cheaper.

I did a few calculations and came up with:
Carvin BX 500 = $399

Avatar 2x12: $389+$48(ship)=$437
Avatar 1x12 $289+$35(ship)=$324
Total Cabs: $761

Grand Total: $399+$761=$1,160

My suggestion is to look into getting one excellent sounding cab that will take care of your sound/volume. Here's an alternative: One 4 ohm Low Down Sound (LDS) 15/6 or 1212/6 and a ampless/speakerless bass trainer for home use. Check out the following link for some ideas: Bass trainers/practice w/o amps

From what I've seen on the TB threads, the LDS cabs are very well designed and will take of pretty much any venue you'll play w/o PA support. Here's a link to the TB LDS thread where you can see a lot of cool sounding cabs: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showth...17#post8421217

Here's a link to very nice LDS rig: Low Down Sound Club: V2

I have a bx500 and a 4ohm 212 and it sounds amazing. It is not as punchy as a 410 but is very smooth. It sounds amazing when you hook up the 4 ohm 212 and a 4ohm 410. I would go with the bx500 and 212.

If you know how to solder you can make one of these things for yourself. Cost not too much over $15.
