Idea for a rig

Sign in to disble this ad
So I've been thinking about finally getting a proper bass rig that can handle small gigs and stuff; something just above bottom-tier cheap amps, but below middle end. This is what I've come up with, and I wanted to hear your thoughts before I really think about getting it!

It consists of a Sansamp RBI preamp, a Rocktron Velocity 100 power amp, and a Behringer Ultrabass BB410 1200W 4x10 cab. The links are below...

Give me your thoughts, if you don't mind!

Youre going to need way more power than that little 40 watt power amp. It costs 250 bucks. You might as well get something thats 300 bucks like this Peavey( http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com...Amp?sku=476311 ) or choose another brand like QSC, Yamaha, etc. For $300 you can get something very good used. I bought my SWR SM-400 for $250 and its been my main workhorse every since. I use that along with a Sansamp RBI and a Sansamp RPM. Its the perfect setup for me with them wired to be a two channel system. A few other commonly/easily found rackmount heads that cost that:
Hartke HA3500, HA5500
Ampeg B2RE

There's a million different cabs you could get that will serve you way better than that Behringer. Hell, you could an Ampeg SVT410HLF used at that price and it would be a light year ahead of the Behringer.

Im sure many others will give their input and brand preferences.

Thanks Parsons! I'm kind of a noob when it comes to choosing gear, so any help in that department is greatly appreciated!

I have looked at the SVT-3 Pro, but I want to keep the whole rig under $800 if possible, I'm sort of on a limited budget! But thanks for the input!

I had a similar plan and budget. Here's what I ended up with:

1. Aguilar Tone Hammer ($199)
2. Peavey IPR 1600 Power Amp ($299)
3. Used Aguilar GS 112 Cab (used ~$300)

I really dig the sound with my 70s P. Best of luck with your search.

I think I'll keep the Sansamp as a pre, and I'll probably go with the Peavy power amp now that it's been suggested twice, and as for the cab, I'm not entirely sure, so I'll see what TB has to say

Cool. I've been pleased with my Peavey. It's very light and plenty loud for my purposes.

Looks like what you have picked out is around $850 all together. I think for that amount you can do much better.

For about the same price you could get this:

More power, better quality and American made!

If your going to go with a Behringer 4x10 cabinet, see if you can find a BA 410 which has the Bugera Aluminum cone speakers. I have punished mine with my Behringer BX4500H head for several years, with no issues. A new Head is $229.00 shipped on ebay. Good used Cabinets can be bought for $100-$150. I have several I bought cheap!

If you are only going to have one Sansamp, get the RPM instead of the RBI. I had the RBI for a long time and while its a great pre amp, the RPM is alot more versatile and costs the same. Later you can add the RBI and have 2 channels of Sansamp goodness!

i'd also rather get a good used 410 than a behringer new. good 410's are all over the place for cheap. if you go used, you could put together a rig that blows that one away for around $500. the sansamp is a good choice, though personally i prefer the vt, but it doesn't have the versatility of the rpm.

Check out Avatar bass cabinets.
Their built very well and they use the same internal componets that the brand-name bass cabinet manufacturers use.......they just sell for roughfully half what the brand-name cabs go for.

Agreed. Used on the cab is the way to go. Although, I'd suggest at least thinking about smaller cabs (210, 212, 115 ect.). Stage space, versatility of sound, and weight all being issues you can work around with multiple smaller cabs.

Sansamp is awesome, also the Peavey Max, and the SVT pro are solid choices in the pre catagory.

Like everyone else that's posted so far, I agree that the Peavey IPR is optimal.

No Behringer cab. Find an old Ampeg on CL.

If you picked the Poweramp because the price is good, check into Crown XTI, and XLS's. Much more powerful, very similar in price. I would say this rig is good besides the Behringer 4x10 (IMO)

Thanks for all of the great responses guys! This is my new and improved rig:

Sansamp Rpm
Crown XLS1000 power amp
Avatar B210 cab

I realized that I didn't really need a 4x10 cab, and that a 2x10 might be more appropriate (plus extra quality), and I decided on the Crown because it looks like it might be a better deal. This is still subject to change though, so keep helping me improve this! I greatly appreciate your time helping me get my money's worth!

This will save you a couple of bucks..

Tech21 Sansamp RPM

I think I'm liking what you have right now.. Better than the first one that you're planning to buy..

Yeah my first plan was pretty terrible, but I'm really a noob to the hardware aspect of being a bassist, so I really appreciate the wealth of knowledge here at TB
