Ideas for Lightweight cabs to pair with a 100 watt tube head?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm currently using a 100 watt Marshall Superlead kit clone with a Bergantino HS210. It sounds pretty good and hits the volume levels I need fairly easily.

This may sound silly seeing as I'm carrying a 50lb head, but I'd like a lighter cab. The head at 40-50ish pounds is a much easier load than the cab (trust me on this). So, I'm interested in what my options are, I try to keep up with all of the development, but cabs are where my bass gear knowledge is the weakest.

What I'm looking for would be:
1. Something that will pair well with the Marshall to get similar volume if not a little louder than the Berg HS210
2. <50lbs...the lighter the better
3. Price is flexible, prefer to not drop the most but could if its worth it.

I really don't have any specific tonal goals, I've owned a decent variety of gear and don't usually have problems making stuff work for me. I don't slap and I like distortion.

Cabs of interest would be a fearful/nearful 15/6 or the Barefacedbass Compact, which seems cool but pricey (I understand a large part of that is shipping costs to the US from England). 26lbs is great, but 35lbs would be fine as well, could somebody like Don at LDS do something similar?

The Audio Kinesis Thunderchild seems cool as well, but other than looking weird with a big wide Marshall head on top, I can't figure out how it would pair.

I'm open to suggestions, it seems most of the lightweight cab users are using a Micro head, so I know a lot of the knowledge base here is geared towards that, but I'm interested to hear what peoples takes on this are.

For me, tubes are best with a cab that doesn't have a tweeter. Sealed might even be better. I happen to really like the Bag End 15's but they weight about 44 lbs.

I own a Barefaced Compact which successfully opens up giant cans of kick ass every time I play it. Love love love this cab ... super light (and small) and it sounds awesome.

I run a very different amp to you (Markbass SA450) so there isn't really much point in me talking about tone in detail. Suffice to say that I haven't had a clearer, more pleasing sound ever.

One thing to be aware of with the Compact is that it is a very well tuned box and a super controlled driver. With most cabs you get a bit of flap as the air moves around the box which helps the speaker move.

With the Barefaced stuff you don't ... it a very controlled sound and the notes really stop well. I gather that this may mean that you have issues getting loads of volume out of low powered valve amps. You should be ok with 100 watts but drop Alex an email ... he's very good about getting back to you.

Hey Paul, have you ever run the Marshall through Patrick's fearful? Last I checked, he was pretty happy putting his V4-B through it, and I think it's a shade under 50 lbs.

I was just messing around today with my '67 YBA-3 and Schroeder 21012L. The Schro might not pack so well in a regular car, but it's nice and easy to move around at 40-ish lbs. Sounds pretty good with tweeter up or down. I prefer it off. I may gig it Thursday.

The 1210 I had sounded good with tube amps, too.

Try to find a pair of SWR Golight 1x15"s. But I like the Bag End suggestion.
