If a cabinet handles 600w program, what does this mean?

I am considering buying a genz benz 2x15 cabinet off of this dude on craigslist, and it's 4 ohms, handles 600w program but he apparently doesn't know the RMS wattage. Will my 500w 4 ohm head blow these speakers? that's basically all I want to know.

Do you know exactly which 215 cabinet? There were 2 different models, with different drivers depending on age. There were also some factory customized models going pretty far back with EV drivers.

Program power is generally considered to be the RMS power with a 6dB crest factor, or 2X the RMS power rating.

Generally, we are pretty conservative with power handling, and I don't recall a 600 watt program rating.

If you are using a modern amp with a proper high pass filter (like any of our amps), I don't think you would have a problem. Be sure to check the used cabinet out carefully, and if you can determine the driver model; number I will check for you.

^ this is why I said I doubt you'll blow it. But do as agedhorse recommends.

That's on you. How handy are you with a master volume knob?

well to put it into perspective, I play in a metalcore band and I am very easily overpowered by my guitarists, so I'm probably going to be pushing quite a bit of power through it

I think you need a couple of 2x15's 9 (or maybe just one fEARful). Moving more air will get you more than adding watts. Stack them vertically for better dispersion.

Either I am getting really forgetful, or the model number is incorrect. I do not remember making an LS-215 cabinet. The LS-115 is rated at 250 watts RMS. I also do not recall ever rating a cabinet using program power. Can you post a picture? What I am concerned about is that somebody built up a cabinet and put a Genz Benz label on it, in which case you would not be getting what you hope.

Can you post a photo? front and back?
