If you have a 1x15 cab, and you add an 8" mid + x-over in a separate cab would you

have a decent 2-way rig?
Was thinking that all the guys with TL606 cabs, could build a very small cabinet with an 8" mid and a simple crossover for cheap.
Would this be an improvement or a waste of time and money?

I use a PJB Briefcase next to a Marbass 15" combo and like it very much. So my guesss would be that it would be an improvement. Better than using tweeters I'd say.

No reason why you couldn't make the crossover and 8 in a separate box. It's essentially the same as doing it all in one cabinet. Only difference being instead of wiring the lowpass side straight to the speaker you'd wire it to a "low-out" jack. Speaker cable from amp to midbox, another speaker cable from "low-out" jack to 15 cab. Fairly simple but decent 2way crossover can be done for around $40 in parts. Total cost for the whole thing could be $100 or a bit less depending on covering, hardware, etc.

On second thought, having inductors and speaker magnets, etc. that close together inside a little sealed box could cause some real problems. May have to make the box bigger than it needs to be with a false back and/or side to make the speaker compartment and have crossover components mounted more towards the outside and farther apart. Inductors make their own little magnetic fields and can really mess things up if they're not far enough apart and/or have their poles turned perpendicular to each other. These aren't real problems in a normal size cabinet because there is enough room.

Had forgotten about the fearful box but am thinking just 2-way; also keeps it simpler & cheaper.
Is this crossover buyable so that with say the 18N speaker, one could build a box out of some scrap lumber, hook it up and see how it sounds?
I don't know how to design crossovers.

Yes. Speakerhardware.com. You may need to email Leland, he just started doing this.
