Speaker area is more important than power. There are many variables, but IMO an 810 and 750 watts SS or 300 watts all-tube will do, goosing the mids. Having said that, I'd just make the guitard see reason and turn down (best of luck with that).

Unless you do the research first putting new drivers in an old box will get you nowhere. A crapshoot at best. It'll be like having a Ferrari and installing bald tyres.

Twice his power if you both insisit on playing at insane volume. If he's a 100 watt, you should be 200 bare minimum. More is ideal. You tone carries through walls, but can't compete with his in the room. To compensate, you need twice the power to mix. I would say shoot from something in the 350 range to give you a little room on the dial.

A good rule of thumb is to have twice the watts as the guitard, however, if said guitard insists on playing at full throttle, either tell the fool to turn it down a notch or go with 350-500 watts and turn your amp towards him. And you only need 1000 watts if your practicing in Wembly Stadium.

I couldn't take more than a 4 in a large room (on a 75watt SS).

My ears are ringing just reading this thread

No. For a 100-watt Marshall cranked, you'll need at least 1,000 watts and a high-quality 810 or two 410s. Seriously. It's difficult to compete with that level of sound. At least he doesn't have it at 11.

You were right. 300 watts won't even come close.

that's kinda what i thought. iv only played bass for one band for about 1 1/2yr. 2 guitar players and i had a ampeg rackmount something (9yr ago) pushing around 1000 watt into a 6x10 and was clipping that often.

+1 bass doesn't need twice the power of a guitar, but more like 5-10x. But also +1 to the other mention, speakers are more important than watts. By a lot. An 8x10 would be needed in this particular case.

100 watt marshall cranked? i would need some serious dough to put up with that on a regular basis. plus 2 svt's, each with its own fridge! and some earplugs...
